The reason it does not feel natural, despite being clearly smaller, is that this is not simply a matter of size. Chin surgery is a procedure that must consider the overall facial proportions and harmony. If the goal is only a partial change, the balance can actually be thrown off. Today, I will organize the reasons a chin surgery may look unnatural in a little more detail.
Disruption of proportions due to excessive bone cutting
If bone cutting is performed excessively based only on the impression that the chin is long, the proportions of the lower face can be disrupted. In the face, balance among the upper, middle, and lower face is important, and if the lower face becomes too short, it may look cramped and the mouth may even appear protruded. Chin surgery requires not just simple reduction, but calculation to leave an appropriate length. In particular, if the existing lower-face length is within the average range, fine adjustments alone may be enough.
When the side profile is not considered
Chin surgery planned only from the front can create unnaturalness from the side. The chin forms three-dimensional harmony by connecting with the tip of the nose, lip protrusion, and neck line. If the chin is pulled in too much or sharply angled in the side view, it can create an artificial impression. In addition, if the chin is moved too far backward, a double chin may become more noticeable. Therefore, analyzing both the front and side views is essential in chin surgery.
Lack of harmony with surrounding contours
If chin surgery is performed alone without considering the square jaw or cheekbone structure, the balance of the lower face can become distorted. If only the chin becomes smaller while the side line remains the same, the face may look as if it has been divided. In particular, when the mandibular angle is wide, the line of the angle can affect the impression more than the length of the chin. In such cases, a natural change is possible only when the overall mandibular line is reviewed together.
When functional factors are overlooked
The chin is not just a cosmetic area; it also affects the bite and muscle balance. If the bite condition or muscle tension is not considered when planning chin surgery, facial expressions may look unnatural. If excessive force is felt in the chin when smiling, or awkwardness is noticeable when speaking, it is worth checking whether the functional analysis was sufficient. An approach that only reduces size has its limits.
Chin surgery is not simply a procedure to make the chin smaller. A natural result comes from considering the length, position, side profile, balance with surrounding structures, and functional stability together. What matters is not “how much to reduce,” but whether it has been adjusted in harmony with the entire face. Only chin surgery that has gone through sufficient analysis and planning can create a refined impression without looking excessive.
