Hello. This is Woori Plastic Surgery.
When the left and right sides of the face do not match or the jaw appears shifted to one side, it is easy to think of it simply as a contour issue. In reality, however, the position of the jawbones and the bite often influence it together. In such cases, it is important to accurately identify the cause of facial asymmetry.
The Difference Between Double Jaw Surgery and Facial Contouring

Facial contouring surgery is a method of refining the outer lines of the face, such as the cheekbones, square jaw, and chin. In contrast, double jaw surgery is a procedure that adjusts the position and angle of the upper and lower jaws to balance the center of the face.
In other words, unlike simply refining the visible lines, double jaw surgery corrects the position of the jawbones themselves, so it can play an important role in improving facial asymmetry.
It also differs in approach in that it can change the overall three-dimensional impression and proportions of the face at the same time.
Two Surgical Methods: IVRO / SSRO

Double jaw surgery commonly uses two methods: IVRO (intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy) and SSRO (sagittal split ramus osteotomy).
IVRO is a method that induces natural fusion after cutting the jawbone,
while SSRO is a method that separates the jawbone and then uses fixation pins to position it.
A surgical plan is established by appropriately selecting between the two methods according to the patient’s jaw structure, bite condition, and degree of facial asymmetry.
Facial Asymmetry
These Are Cases That Need Checking

A problem with jawbone position can affect not only appearance but also functional aspects.
📌 Underbite (skeletal Class III malocclusion)
A case where the lower jaw is excessively developed, making it difficult to close the mouth
📌 Receding chin (skeletal Class II malocclusion)
A case where the lower jaw is set back, making the facial outline appear blurred
📌 Protruding mouth
A case where both the upper and lower jaws protrude forward and the mouth does not close naturally
📌 Facial asymmetry
A case where the jaw is shifted to one side or the midline is misaligned
📌 Long face shape
A case where the midface appears long and the overall impression looks elongated
In these various cases, functional problems may accompany facial asymmetry as well.
Why Correction to the Normal Position Is Important

Double jaw surgery aims to move the maxilla and mandible within the normal range to balance the face.
When the jawbone position is corrected, not only can the appearance change, but bite stability and the overall facial balance may also improve. In particular, when facial asymmetry is present, the process of aligning the midline becomes especially important.
Facial asymmetry often involves not only visible appearance issues but also the position of the jawbones and the bite.
Therefore, if you are considering improving facial asymmetry, it is necessary to check not only the appearance but also the functional aspects. Based on an accurate diagnosis, we recommend setting a surgical direction that is appropriate for you.
