Hello, this is AB Plastic Surgery.
Today, together with Director Ahn Seung-hyun,
we’ll take a look at fixation pins after contouring surgery.

To explain based on the three major contouring procedures, square jaw surgery, which cuts and removes bone, does not require pin fixation. However, zygoma and chin surgeries, which involve cutting the bone, moving it, and allowing the bone to reattach in the new position, do require pin fixation.

In zygoma surgery, pin fixation is done in two areas: the 45-degree zygoma and the side zygoma.
The usual number of fixation pins is 4 for the 45-degree zygoma and 2 for the side zygoma.
In the case of zygoma surgery, the bone has to reattach, and since this bone may sink downward and cause sagging in the cheeks, pin fixation is essential.
The number of fixation pins used in chin surgery may vary depending on the surgical method.

Fixation pins in the zygoma area may be felt externally in people with thin skin,
and they are especially often felt in the side zygoma area.
They do not look bumpy from the outside, but the pins in the side zygoma area can be easily felt through the skin,
and there is no major problem even if you live with them for the rest of your life.

If you do not like feeling the pins or seeing them on an X-ray at the dentist,
fixation pin removal is possible after at least 6 months following surgery.
However, removal also requires general anesthesia and an incision, which can be a burden,
so many people choose not to remove them. After more than 6 months have passed,
the bone has already completely healed, so there is no problem even if the pins are not removed.

At airports, there is a walk-through metal detector,
and after passing through it, security also sweeps your body with a wand-like metal detector.
Fixation pins may trigger a response only if the wand-like metal detector is held directly against the face.
However, this almost never happens, so there is no need to worry about fixation pins at the airport.
Today, we briefly looked at fixation pins after contouring surgery.
