Hello, this is AB Plastic Surgery.
I wrote this post to answer questions that many of you have been curious about.
Q. Are there eyes that are bound to fail after double eyelid surgery?
AB. As a doctor, it is a little difficult to define what counts as a surgical failure, but in the case of double eyelid surgery, I think a situation where the result looks very different from what was desired, or where the outcome looks obviously unnatural, would be what patients consider a failed case. I have organized a few cases where patients were not satisfied after surgery.
- The eye shape the person wants does not actually suit them well
Among people who want double eyelid surgery, there are some who see celebrities or influencers and say, “Please make my eyes look like that!” However, just as everyone has a different face, you need to think again about whether that person’s eye shape would really suit you. In many cases, simply creating a double eyelid does not make you look exactly like that person, and conversely, that person may not have had eyes that were especially beautiful when viewed on their own. Even if we create eyes that are similar to the photo you want, if the line does not suit you well, you may feel dissatisfied. In cases like this, it is important to meet with a plastic surgeon, try out the line, and find the line that suits you best.
- The patient themselves did not really know what shape would result after surgery
Unlike the people mentioned above, some patients come in saying, “Doctor, I don’t really know, so please recommend something for me.” In such cases, the plastic surgeon will think carefully and recommend a double eyelid line or eye correction that suits the patient as well as possible, and through sufficient explanation, it is important for the patient to understand well the changes in shape that will occur after surgery. Sometimes patients do not fully understand the differences between procedures or the changes in appearance that result from surgery, and simply expect that they will end up with pretty eyes. Then, after surgery, they may feel awkward and surprised by the changed shape of their own eyes.
- The shape changes after surgery
Rather than being a failure, this can be considered a case that requires follow-up treatment. There are cases where the patient keeps rubbing the surgical area, or does not manage it well by closing and opening the eyes excessively, and unavoidable situations such as inflammation or the tied thread coming loose can also occur. In these cases, after allowing some time for the area to stabilize, the line can be redrawn to correct the parts that have become unsatisfactory. However, there are also cases where waiting a little longer gives better results than solving it immediately, so if this happens, it is important to consult with a plastic surgeon and make a good plan for what to do next.
There are no eyes that are specifically bound to fail. Because the line that suits each person is different and what each person wants is slightly different, if surgery is performed in a way that fits each individual, anyone can have beautiful eyes without failure. Of course, from a plastic surgeon’s perspective, there are eyes that are somewhat more difficult to create a double eyelid for, or eyes where the line may loosen more easily. But that is only a matter that requires a little more care during surgery; I do not think it is a separate issue from a failed result. At AB Plastic Surgery, we think together with the patient and make a plan that fits their eyes, so please do not worry about that and come for a consultation at a time that is convenient for you.
