Hello. I’m Director Seo Chan-eol of AB Plastic Surgery.
Sometimes, when people undergo rhinoplasty, they are told that nostril reduction can be done later, or they decide not to do it because they think it is unnecessary. Then, after recovery, they regret not having had nostril reduction. After rhinoplasty using implants, cartilage grafts, osteotomy, and similar techniques, if the overall line of the nose becomes slimmer and higher, the existing nostril area may appear wider, which is one such case.
If you are considering an additional nostril reduction, it can be done under local anesthesia alone, and the incision is made either on the outer or inner side of the base of the nostril, so it does not overlap with the previous incision site. For that reason, it is possible at any time after nasal surgery. However, if additional treatment is performed, the length of the existing surgical design tends to become slightly shorter, and it can change the line, so to maintain overall harmony, we recommend proceeding at least one month later, after the major swelling has gone down, if possible.
If you did not proceed because you were hesitant about osteotomy or other additional surgery, but then decide to have extra treatment because you are unsatisfied with the result, would that count as revision surgery?
If osteotomy or similar procedures are performed later, they are not considered revision surgery because they are done without touching the existing bridge of the nose. However, you should note that, as with the above, the already adjusted nose line may change.
The specialist who performed the rhinoplasty will know the internal condition of the nose and the shape you want best, so if you are considering additional nostril reduction or other osteotomy, discussing the timing and method and deciding together will help achieve the best result.
