Hello. This is AB Plastic Surgery.
I am writing this post to provide accurate medical information about gynecomastia.
In the previous post,
I explained that gynecomastia (= male breast enlargement, Gynecomastia) refers to a condition in which a man’s breasts become excessively enlarged.
This time, I would like to talk about how the severity is classified and about treatment methods for gynecomastia.
(3) How is the severity of gynecomastia classified?
It is usually divided into three stages.
(There are various classification methods, so it is sometimes divided into four stages depending on the case. In fact, this is not very important.)
Let’s look at the figures together.

Stage 1 (Figure A): The chest is enlarged, but the skin is not considered to be sagging (it still has elasticity), and there is no inframammary fold.
Stage 2 (Figure B): The chest is enlarged, the skin is not yet severely sagging, and an inframammary fold has formed.
Stage 3 (Figure C): The chest is enlarged and drooping, there is skin sagging and reduced elasticity, and there is an inframammary fold.

There are also other classification methods, as shown above.
Simply put,
The more the chest is enlarged, the more sagging occurs, and the more the skin loosens, the more severe the gynecomastia is considered to be.
(4) What are the treatment options for gynecomastia?
Treatment methods are selected appropriately according to the algorithm below, after identifying the characteristics of the gynecomastia.
The table below is based on a section included in a plastic surgery textbook used worldwide, with the terms changed into Korean by me.

To explain it in simpler terms.
Tissue with a lot of fat - Liposuction for fat is needed.
Firm tissue (with a lot of glandular parenchyma) - Resection of the glandular tissue is needed.
When the skin is only slightly loose and still has elasticity - Skin resection is not necessary.
When there is a lot of skin laxity and severe sagging - Skin resection is needed.
I hope this will be helpful for men who are worried about gynecomastia.
Thank you.
