Hello. I’m Director Seo Chan-eol of AB Plastic Surgery.
I’ll answer a question that many of you have been curious about regarding nose surgery!
After rhinoplasty, there are cases where the tip of the nose becomes red, mainly in cold weather.
Why does this happen?
The answer is that the skin at the tip of the nose becomes thinner after surgery.
Usually, during rhinoplasty, when the nasal tip is raised, that area is directly subjected to pressure, which can thin the skin at the tip. In some cases, thick skin is intentionally made thinner to correct a bulbous nose.
In cold temperatures, the blood vessels throughout the body constrict to prevent heat loss from the body to the outside. When they constrict, the diameter of the blood vessels becomes smaller, so blood flow moves faster instead. Areas where the skin has become thinner can turn red when blood flow increases like this.
This is different from redness caused by inflammation. This phenomenon is temporary and recovers quickly, whereas in inflammation, the redness gradually spreads, there is swelling, and it is accompanied by pain when pressed.
Then does this happen inevitably after rhinoplasty? That is not the case. Even in a natural nose, this can occur depending on skin thickness. If this symptom is severe and bothersome after rhinoplasty, it may improve by adding dermis or an artificial dermis to reinforce the thickness of the skin.
