Hello, I’m Director Seo Chan-eol of AB Plastic Surgery.
Today, I’d like to address some questions you may have about rhinoplasty.
Q. What is the difference between mesh and silicone in rhinoplasty?
In rhinoplasty, mesh is a material that is not used very frequently.
It was mainly used in the past at the nasal tip as a support structure to lift the tip.
It is a synthetic implant material in a mesh form made of polycaprolactone and polydioxanone,
and was used to replace human tissue material when there was a shortage of it.
When mesh is used at the nasal tip, there are some disadvantages in the long term, so it is not used as often these days.
The biggest drawback is that during the absorption process, it can erode the septal cartilage and weaken the structure.
As a result, the surrounding tissue may contract, which can cause severe drooping of the nasal tip.
It is also vulnerable to infection, and because it adheres strongly, removal can be difficult.
Because of these issues, human tissue materials such as septal cartilage, ear cartilage, and rib cartilage are now used more often for the nasal tip.
Unlike mesh, silicone is used as a material to reinforce the nasal bridge rather than the nasal tip.
For the advantages and disadvantages, please refer to a previous post I wrote.
Despite its drawbacks, it is more stable than other materials and produces the most dramatic change in shape, so it is used most often.
I hope this was helpful in answering your questions, and I’ll end here.
