Hello, I am Dr. Jo Gyu-sang of AB Plastic Surgery.
Today, I will answer the question of what materials are possible if an implant is not used.
Q. If I don’t want to use an implant, what material should I use?
If you do not want to use an implant, autologous tissue or donor tissue can be considered.
Among autologous tissues, the most commonly used are septal cartilage, which acts as a partition inside the nose, or ear cartilage harvested from the auricle.
However, the amount that can be harvested varies from person to person, so depending on the surgical goal, it may be insufficient. In such cases, rib cartilage can be harvested.
In addition, autologous dermis can be harvested to reinforce areas where the skin has become thin or to raise the nasal bridge naturally.
If autologous tissue cannot be used, donated dermis or donated cartilage may also be used.
These are tissues processed by removing cellular components from donated skin or cartilage from another person, minimizing the risk of rejection,
and they are used as safe materials that have been approved by the U.S. FDA.
Since each material has its own pros and cons, if you want rhinoplasty without using an implant, it is important to have a thorough consultation with a specialist
and choose the best method that matches your individual condition and goals.
