Hello, I am Director Ahn Mun-young of AB Plastic Surgery.
I will answer the questions you have been curious about.
Q. What is the purpose of epicanthoplasty?
A. Epicanthoplasty is mainly performed to remove a prominent epicanthal fold and extend the horizontal length of the eyes.
In many East Asians, the epicanthal fold is present from birth, so the inner corners of the eyes may be covered, making the eyes appear smaller or giving them a more closed-off look.
In such cases, epicanthoplasty can create a brighter, more defined eye shape.
In addition, epicanthoplasty is also used when the distance between the eyes appears wide.
Generally, the ideal distance between the eyes is considered to be similar to the horizontal width of one eye.
If the eyes appear far apart, it can give the face a broader impression.
By adjusting the spacing between the eyes through epicanthoplasty, a more balanced facial proportion can be achieved.
Moreover, epicanthoplasty can also help improve the eye shape.
If the inner corner of the eye is covered, the eyes may look round or droopy.
Correcting this through epicanthoplasty can create a longer, more refined eye shape.
However, if the epicanthal fold is not very pronounced, there is no need to specifically undergo epicanthoplasty, since sufficiently large-looking eyes can still be achieved.
It is important to choose a surgical method that suits your own eye shape and facial features.
I hope this answer was helpful.
