[Medical Today] Precise Diagnosis Should Come First for Men with a Crooked Nose or Hump Nose Accompanied by Nasal Obstruction

As men’s interest in their appearance and self-care has grown recently, demand for male rhinoplasty, which influences the overall impression of the face, has increased significantly. In particular, more men are seeking to improve not only structural concerns such as a crooked nose and hump nose, but also functional issues such as nasal obstruction, rather than simply having the bridge of the nose raised. Because male rhinoplasty often needs to address multiple concerns at once, the importance of a thorough preoperative diagnosis is being emphasized even more.

The anatomical structure of men’s noses differs from that of women.

Park Seong-hoon, director of AB Plastic Surgery, explained, “Successful male rhinoplasty should not be limited to simply changing the height or shape of the nose; it must be designed with consideration for harmony with the overall facial bone structure.” He added, “Men often have thicker skin and more developed bone structure than women, so they show a clear preference for a ‘straight male nose’ that extends cleanly from the glabella to the tip of the nose, rather than a more elaborate curved line.”

In particular, satisfaction may be lower if surgery for a crooked nose or hump nose—conditions commonly experienced by men—is performed with a focus only on the external appearance.

This is because a hump nose often involves a complex structure in which the hard nasal bones and cartilage protrude together.

Director Park emphasized, “When performing surgery for a male hump nose, if only the hump is excessively removed, the upper nasal bones may become relatively wide, making the nasal bridge appear flat and blunt when viewed from the front.” He continued, “To prevent such complications, the separated bones must be brought inward through nasal osteotomy, and the central axis of the nose must be corrected. This is necessary to achieve a sleek, stable straight-nose line from both the front and side views.”

In addition, many patients with a crooked nose or hump nose have structural abnormalities inside the nose, such as a deviated nasal septum, and experience chronic nasal obstruction.

If only the external appearance is corrected without a careful analysis of the internal nasal structure, nasal obstruction or impaired nasal function may persist after surgery or even worsen. Therefore, before surgery, it is essential to comprehensively assess the condition of the nasal septum, the axis of the nasal bones, and the internal nasal structure through a precise diagnosis such as 3D CT imaging.

Director Park Seong-hoon advised, “To achieve satisfactory results from male rhinoplasty, a customized plan must be established that takes into account each individual’s skin thickness, the strength of the supporting cartilage, and the functional causes of nasal obstruction.” He added, “The more severe the crooked nose—particularly in cases involving a history of trauma or significant congenital asymmetry—the wiser it is to undergo a precise diagnosis and proceed safely with surgery under the care of an experienced medical professional who can improve both appearance and function.”
