Hello.
I am 신승한, director of 맘스외과성형외과.
Today, I would like to discuss a special topic:
A special type of breast shape.
That is,
Tuberous breast.
Although this breast shape is fairly common,
there is actually still no appropriate Korean term for it.
It is referred to by various terms, such as
pointed breasts, constricted breasts, or tubular breasts.

The word “tuberous” refers to
a tuberous root.
Simply put,
it describes tubers and tuberous roots,
such as potatoes and sweet potatoes.
Due to a variation in breast shape,
the base is narrow, while the tissue is concentrated
in a rounded form mainly around the areola.
Because it resembles a potato hanging from a plant,
it is called a tuberous breast.
Personally, I believe that “tuberous breast”
is an intuitive and accurate expression.

To explain tuberous breasts
in more detail, there are several characteristics.
Characteristic ① of Tuberous Breasts
The mammary gland tissue is distributed only around the nipple and areola,
so the dark areola becomes greatly enlarged,
to the extent that it accounts for more than half of the entire breast.

Characteristic ② of Tuberous Breasts
Second, because there is insufficient tissue in the lower breast,
the base of the breast is very narrow.

Characteristic ③ of Tuberous Breasts
The final characteristic is that, in most cases,
both breasts show pronounced asymmetry.

In fact, this breast shape
is not uncommon in clinical practice.
The underlying cause is a problem
in the development of the superficial fascia of the breast.
Instead of expanding smoothly,
this fascia acts like a firm band,
preventing the mammary gland tissue
from growing naturally.

As a result, the mammary gland tissue grows
while remaining concentrated around the areola,
which causes the breast to become excessively enlarged
only in the areolar area.
Because the superficial fascia is constricting it like a band,
the breast inevitably develops
into a shape resembling a potato or sweet potato.

How Are Tuberous Breasts Treated?
Treatment can be broadly divided
into three parts.

Tuberous Breast Treatment ①
Because normal breast development has been restricted,
resulting in a significant lack of volume,
implants are necessary.

Since breast asymmetry is also present in most cases,
implants are used to correct it as well.

Tuberous Breast Treatment ②
The next step is to reduce the excessively enlarged areola
to a normal size.

Tuberous Breast Treatment ③
The third and final step is the most difficult.
The tissue excessively concentrated around the areola
is formed into a flap,
then moved downward to supplement the volume.
This process is essential to definitively release
the superficial fascial band that causes this condition,
create a natural shape,
and lower the inframammary fold to its normal position.

Although this breast shape is fairly common,
many people assume that it is a congenital deformity,
feel embarrassed to tell those around them,
or simply continue living with it.
I believe that understanding its causes and treatment methods
can help you find the courage
to actively pursue treatment.
