Hello.
This is Jin Young Lim,
Chief Director of Piaf Clinic.
“There are so many types of eyelid surgery
that I don’t know which one to choose.”
“When I look at eyelid surgery reviews,
there are also many posts saying
they regret it because it looks unnatural...
Is it really okay?”
If you’re reading this now,
you may be struggling with
the same concerns.
Then first,
I want to say this.
That worry
is completely natural.
These days,
there is an overwhelming amount of information.
Just by searching online,
you’ll find incision methods, non-incision methods, epicanthoplasty,
lateral canthoplasty, ptosis correction...
There are many methods,
and the reviews are all over the place.

Some say the incision method is definitely effective,
while others recommend the non-incision method
because it leaves no scar and looks natural.
Maybe that’s why,
after reading for a while,
your mind can end up more confused
than it was at the start.
It seems like there should be a clear answer,
yet you can’t be sure of anything.
So today, I want to talk about
'how to choose the surgery
that suits you'.
And 'how to create a natural result'.
If you read to the end,
what once felt vague
will become a little clearer,
and you’ll get a better sense of
where to begin.

Which surgery
is better?
Many of you
may be curious about this.
But
this is a question that needs
to be reframed a little.
Rather than asking, "Which type of eyelid surgery is better?"
it’s much more important to ask,
"Which surgery is right for me?"

Why is that?
Because the structure of the eyes
is more complex than you might think.
You can’t judge only by the visible eye shape
or whether there is a double eyelid.
The thickness of the eyelid skin,
the amount of fat, and muscle strength.
Even the distance from the eyebrows
all have an effect.
And the movements when opening and closing the eyes,
even the muscle patterns that show in facial expressions.
It is truly a delicate and precise structure.
Even when the same type of eyelid surgery is chosen,
results differ from person to person.
That is why.

And if these functional factors are ignored
and surgery is decided based only on appearance,
it becomes increasingly difficult
to maintain natural-looking results.
Let’s explain using double eyelid surgery as an example.
The representative methods are the non-incision method, incision method,
and partial incision method.
The non-incision method creates a double eyelid line by using sutures
to fix the skin and muscle together without making an incision.
Its advantages are that there is almost no scar,
and recovery is quick.

So it is suitable for younger people
with thin skin
and not much fat.
However, if the eyelids are thick
or contain a lot of fat,
the fixation may be weak,
and over time the line may loosen.
On the other hand, the incision method...
It involves making an incision in the skin to remove fat,
and, if necessary, refining even the eyelid muscle
while creating the line.

The line is more defined and stable,
but swelling and the recovery period tend to be longer.
Some scarring
may also remain.
The method with characteristics in between
is the partial incision method.
It minimizes skin incision
while allowing some internal tissue adjustment.
Because of that, it is more stable than the non-incision method
and recovers faster than the incision method,
so you can think of it as a kind of
balanced option.
At this point, many people say,

Then which surgery
is the best?
I always answer like this.
More important than the surgical method
is whether it is designed for me.
Copying someone else’s pretty eyes
does not produce the same result.

If surgery is forced in a way that does not fit
each person’s structure,
it may look fine at first,
but as time passes, it will start to show.
For example, in cases like this.
What if your eyelids are thick
and have a lot of fat,
but you insisted on the non-incision method
because you didn’t want a scar?
Right after surgery, the line may look beautiful...
but if the tissue is not properly fixed,
it may gradually loosen,
or the line may become uneven.
Another important factor is the strength of opening the eyes,
that is, whether ptosis is present.

If the levator muscle that opens the eyelid is weak
but only a double eyelid line is created,
the face will still look sleepy.
Then a habit develops of using the forehead excessively
when opening the eyes.
If this repeats,
it leads to what is called the "frontalis compensation effect,"
where forehead wrinkles deepen,
and even the facial expression starts to look unnatural.
In other words, function and expression end up out of sync.
In the end, what we call
“natural plastic surgery” is not completed simply by the width
or thickness of the double eyelid line.
Then where does real
naturalness come from?
The movement of the eyes, the distance from the eyebrows,
the flow of facial expressions,
and harmony with the overall impression of the face.

When all of these align, we get the impression,
"Ah, that looks truly natural."
A surgery is truly successful when it blends into your expressions
n
without awkwardness even when you close and open your eyes,
or when you smile.
That is why choosing a clinic is
extremely important.
You should be careful about deciding
based only on someone else’s eyelid surgery review
or on popularity.
How accurately they analyze your eyes.
Whether they can design while considering
your expressions and overall impression.
These are the factors that determine
whether the surgery succeeds or fails.

So from now on, try changing the question like this.
Instead of asking, “Which type of eyelid surgery is better?”
ask, “Which surgery suits my eyes best?”
The truly important answer
is inside that question.

Before I finish,
there is one thing I definitely want to say.
Eyelid surgery is not simply a surgery to make the eyes bigger
and more defined.
In the end, it is a way of expressing yourself more like yourself,
and a process of bringing out your natural expression
and atmosphere more naturally.

So when deciding on a type of eyelid surgery,
simply following reviews like “someone had this done and it became pretty”
may honestly not be very helpful.
What really matters is finding the most natural
and harmonious line within your own face.
Going through that process is what ultimately leads
to the most satisfying result.

Thank you for reading this long post to the end today.

Chief Director of Piaf Clinic.
