Hello. I am Lim Jin-young, chief director of Piaf Clinic.
These days, more and more people are seeking Newviju because of a less defined jawline.
Newviju is an injection for improving submental fat, with cholic acid as its main ingredient. It helps break down fat.
However, quite a few people come to us saying that the swelling lasted too long after receiving Newviju or that they did not notice the jawline changes they had expected.
As a plastic surgeon, I can tell you that there are three reasons why people do not see the full effects of Newviju.
The first is injection depth.
The second is the interval between treatments.
The third is your condition before the procedure.
If you undergo the procedure without understanding these three factors, you may spend the money but experience swelling lasting more than two weeks and only ambiguous results.
If you spend just three minutes reading this, you can learn how to reduce side effects and get the proper effects of Newviju.
- Why swelling lasts a long time

Swelling after receiving Newviju cannot be avoided completely. This is because an inflammatory response occurs as cholic acid breaks down fat cells.
Since this can also be a sign that the procedure is working properly, it cannot necessarily be considered a “side effect.”
The difference lies in whether the swelling subsides within three days or lasts for more than two weeks.
The factor that creates this difference is injection depth. Newviju must be injected precisely into the subcutaneous fat layer beneath the chin.

However, the thickness of this fat layer varies from person to person. If there is little fat, the layer itself is thin, so injecting at the same depth may place the product close to the muscle layer.
On the other hand, if the fat layer is thick, the product may not be injected deeply enough, which can dilute the effects of Newviju.
Because this adjustment is important, I first check the thickness of the submental fat layer by palpation before injecting.
I carefully assess it, even if it takes time, because I need to determine how thick the layer is and where the fat is mainly distributed in order to identify the appropriate injection depth and injection points for each patient.
What happens if this process is skipped?
The product may enter an area other than the fat layer, reducing its effects while causing more swelling and bruising.
This is why side effects can occur.
If your swelling lasted unusually long, the injection site may not have been appropriate for the thickness of your fat layer, so you should have it checked.
- If the effects of Newviju are weaker than expected

You may have experienced a situation where there were no side effects, but you could not tell whether the procedure was working.
Even with the same Newviju treatment, some people see a clear change in their jawline after only three sessions, while others see little change even after six sessions, right?
In these cases, the interval between treatments and the rate of response are often the issues.
Newviju is administered repeatedly, usually at four-week intervals, for a total of six treatments. This is because it takes time for the body to eliminate the waste products after cholic acid breaks down fat cells.
If you receive another treatment before this process has sufficiently taken place...
The swelling may overlap, while the fat-reduction effect itself does not accumulate.
Conversely, if the interval becomes too long...
A compensatory response may occur around the destroyed fat cells, which can reduce the effect.
If the effects feel weak, you should first check whether you are following the recommended intervals and whether you are also maintaining adequate hydration and lymphatic circulation.
- What I always check
Newviju can be a very good procedure when administered properly.

However, I feel sorry for people who received the procedure elsewhere, experienced swelling that lasted too long, or were advised to undergo the same procedure again because they saw no results.
Repeating the procedure without identifying the cause is unlikely to change the outcome.
That is why I do not automatically perform the procedure on the same day simply because a patient requests it.

If there is active inflammation or a skin problem, I do not recommend proceeding right away. If cholic acid is injected while inflammation is present, it may combine with the existing inflammatory response, causing much more swelling and delaying recovery.
I proceed only after confirming that the skin has stabilized.
Even when the results after the procedure do not meet expectations, I first look for the cause.
Whether the issue is the injection depth, the interval between treatments, or poor lymphatic circulation, among other possibilities...
Without this assessment, the same symptoms may recur.
“Are the side effects not too severe? I heard the effects wear off quickly.”
If you have postponed treatment because of these concerns, start by visiting a clinic that accurately assesses your facial type through palpation.
This is an overview of why the effects and side effects of Newviju occur and how the treatment should be tailored.
I hope this article helps those who have been hesitant because of concerns about swelling and those who were disappointed with the results after receiving the treatment.
