After rhinoplasty, our clinic thoroughly explains the “precautions” to patients. Surgery is important, but aftercare is also very important. No matter how well the surgery turns out, if aftercare is neglected, patient satisfaction will drop, and in the case of the nose, functional problems can also occur. That is why we make sure to explain these points carefully.

However, it seems that even precautions have levels: some are followed, while others are not. So we prepared this.

Things you must be careful about

If you are careful for 3 months, the rest of your life will be happy.

• Do not cough after surgery. Do not strain your face.

• Do not do strenuous exercise.

• Do not do aerobic exercise.

First, the reason for this first precaution is “hemostasis.”

After surgery, the final step is always hemostasis. However, it is somewhat risky to think that there will be no more bleeding after hemostasis is done. That is because bleeding can definitely happen again at the hemostatic site.

During the rhinoplasty process, when the nose is lifted or released, blood vessels are cut. Because of this, the medical team intentionally uses electrocautery with a device called BOVIE to seal the blood vessels so they do not bleed. But this is not something that stays permanently closed; you can think of it as being temporarily sealed.

Therefore, about 3 to 4 days after surgery, if you go swimming, running, or otherwise strain your face, your blood pressure will rise and the hemostatic site may burst. If the hemostatic site bursts, bleeding is unavoidable, and bleeding from the nose is not a good situation. That is why we tell patients as a precaution for 3 months after rhinoplasty not to do anything that strains the face.

In particular, after nose surgery, if you do strenuous exercise and can do it without straining your face, that is fine, but if it requires excessive force, you should refrain.

Lastly, we also advise against aerobic exercise. Rhinoplasty means building up the nose. The process of building up the nose involves placing structural material and fixing it to the desired nose using thin thread. Since the thread is much thinner than expected, if you do aerobic exercise such as running, the thread used to hold the structure in place may break.

In that case, the structure that was set up may drop down, or the silicone may move, so it is best to avoid aerobic exercise if possible.

For wearing glasses, please do it like this.

For lightweight glasses, be careful for 2 to 3 weeks; for heavy glasses, be careful for about 1 month.

As for saunas, you may use them.

However, do not go in before the stitches have been removed. You may go in after 3 to 4 weeks.
