Then and now, double eyelid surgery is still one of the most popular cosmetic procedures.
The shape of a double eyelid can differ for each person and each face, and the overall impression can change a lot depending on which line is chosen for the surgery. So if you are deciding on double eyelid surgery, it is important to choose a shape that suits you rather than copying someone else’s double eyelid line shape and height.
There is no clear standard for the ideal double eyelid line.
This is because everyone has different standards for what looks beautiful and different preferences for eye shape. Still, if we had to describe an ideal line, it would be the one that suits you best and makes you look your best.
However, since some standard is still needed, this post will look at double eyelid line shapes and heights.
Depending on where the line starts, double eyelid lines are divided into three types:
Inline (infold)
Outline (outfold)
In-outline (in-outfold)
Inline
The line starts where it is not visible at the inner corner of the eye. A shape that gradually becomes higher toward the outer side is the 특징 of this line.
It is a common type among East Asians, looks natural overall, and the line is not high.
If you want a slight, natural-looking double eyelid or a look that seems almost unoperated on, consider an inline.
However, if the inner corner of the eye is narrow and the outer corner is higher than the inner corner, this line may look awkward. That is because the line can press down the inner eye area, making it look narrower and sharper, and can make the eyes seem even more upturned.
For such eye shapes, it is better to place the starting point of the double eyelid farther from the eye so that the inner part of the eye is pulled upward. In that case, the eyes can also feel more open and larger.
Outline
The starting point of the line begins away from the eye. It is a common type among Westerners.
If you want larger, more defined eyes, consider an outline. For eyes whose outer corners are higher than the inner corners, this line can help soften the impression.
However, if the line is set too high, it can look unnatural, and if there is an epicanthal fold, it may feel somewhat awkward. Since the change in appearance can also be quite dramatic, this should be taken into account.
In-outline
This is an intermediate type between inline and outline. The inner starting point of the eye line is slightly lifted, and it widens as it goes toward the outer side. It makes the eyes look open and refreshing, but without looking unnatural or awkward. It is a line that can be chosen comfortably regardless of eye shape.
The Height of the Double Eyelid Line
How much is appropriate?
Not only the shape of the line, but also the height of the line is very important.
If the line is too high, it can look unnatural, and if it is too low, the effect of the surgery can seem weak.
Of course, the preferred double eyelid height differs from person to person, but in general, the height that looks most naturally balanced is considered to be about 20% of the vertical height of the eye.
For example, if the eye size is about 10 mm when the eyes are opened comfortably, a double eyelid line height of about 2 mm may look natural. Even if you want a high and deep double eyelid, it is recommended not to go far beyond this range.
Double Eyelid Surgery Methods
The surgical method is mostly determined after assessing the condition of the skin.
If the eyelids are thick and have a lot of fat, the incision method is suitable; if not, the buried-suture method is appropriate.
There is also a partial-incision method, which removes eyelid fat through a small incision and then creates the double eyelid using the buried-suture method.
It can be considered when the cause of thick eyelids is fat.
There is a perception that “if you do the incision method, it will look unnatural,
and if you do the buried-suture method, it will easily come undone.”
But that is not the case.
If you choose a surgical method that does not match your condition, the result may be improved in an unnatural way, and you may need revision surgery.
For example, if a thick eyelid is treated with the buried-suture method, it may look puffy as if the swelling has not gone down, or it may be more likely to come undone. On the other hand, if the eyelid is thin,
using the incision method that removes fat may cause a sunken area above the line or create multiple lines.
Therefore, please make sure to receive an accurate consultation with a doctor to determine the double eyelid line and surgical method that are most suitable and flattering for you.
