The skin around the eyes is thin and delicate,
so signs of aging
can appear quickly in this area.
This can make
sagging or wrinkles around the eyes
stand out clearly.
In particular, the under-eye area may sag
and protrude in a puffy shape,
and when this is visible to others,
it can give the impression
that you look tired or dull,
so it is something that can be a concern depending on the person.
✓ Under-eye sagging
✓ Puffy under-eyes
✓ Tired-looking expression
Because of the discomfort caused by these symptoms,
many people want to improve them through
under-eye fat repositioning or lower blepharoplasty.
However, many people do not clearly understand
the difference between these two surgeries.
Under-Eye Fat Repositioning vs. Lower Blepharoplasty
Both of these surgeries improve the three symptoms
mentioned above,
but there are clear differences.
■ The structure of the under-eye area
To understand the difference between the two,
first you need to understand the structure under the eyes.
The outermost layer is the skin,
and beneath it is the muscle.
Below the muscle is the orbital septum, and the innermost layer contains fat.
■ Why the under-eye area sags
This happens because the orbital septum tissue weakens
and the fat inside it is pushed downward.
As a result, puffiness under the eyes occurs,
so the fat and orbital septum tissue need to be improved
in order to correct the puffy under-eye shape.
✓ Under-eye fat repositioning: A surgery that improves the area by making incisions only through the two layers of the orbital septum and the inner fat
✓ Lower blepharoplasty: A surgery that addresses all four layers, including the skin, muscle, orbital septum, and fat
In the end, lower blepharoplasty
can be considered to include
under-eye fat repositioning.
However, the necessary procedure differs from person to person,
so an exact decision must be made
through consultation with a medical professional.
Which surgery is right for me,
under-eye fat repositioning vs. lower blepharoplasty?
✓ Snapback test: A test that measures how long it takes for the under-eye area to return to its original state after pulling it downward and releasing it. If skin elasticity is reduced, it may take 1–2 seconds, and in such cases, there may be limits to improvement with under-eye fat repositioning alone.
✓ Distraction test: A test that checks the length of the under-eye skin when it is pulled forward. If the stretched length is 6–8 mm or more, the elasticity is judged to be reduced, so lower blepharoplasty is recommended rather than under-eye fat repositioning.
Difference between under-eye fat repositioning and lower blepharoplasty
It depends on which area is treated.
■ If you are in your 20s or 30s and muscle sagging or skin sagging is not severe,
under-eye fat repositioning alone may be effective,
but
■ If you are over 50,
you should consider lower blepharoplasty.
However, this decision should not be made based on age,
but after an accurate diagnosis of each individual's situation.
Therefore, please make your decision after 충분한 상담 through consultation before surgery.
