If you look at Western eyes, the skin around the eyes is thin, there is not much fullness, and the eyeball appears more deeply set.

Asian eyes tend to have thicker skin around the eyes, a fuller look, more fat, and an appearance of the eyeball being less exposed.

One of the factors that creates this impression is the epicanthal fold, which is the fold covering the inner corner of the eye. Because of this part, the inner corner of the upper eyelid double crease tends to feel as if it folds inward. This is what is commonly called an in-fold line.

Because the epicanthal fold keeps pulling on the double-eyelid line, over time the crease can gradually fold inward and become lower overall, tending to settle downward.

For a stable line, this needs to be removed, and this is also the most common reason for epicanthoplasty.

■ To remove the epicanthal fold and create a more refined impression

The epicanthal fold is present in almost all Northeast Asians. Even if there may be some genetic background from the past, from a present-day perspective, it is true that it can give a somewhat rough and darker impression.

When the epicanthal fold is removed, the shape of the inner eye corner changes, the eye appearance becomes more Westernized, and it can give a more refined impression.

■ To narrow the distance between the eyes

The distance between the eyes can be discussed in two ways.

When the distance between the centers of both pupils is close, it is called esotropia. Through epicanthoplasty, an unexpectedly positive effect can be seen.

A wide distance between the eyes is due to the gap between the inner corners of both eyes, that is, the inner canthi, and this can be considered the most representative case among the reasons for epicanthoplasty.

In the case of eyes, it seems that each person has a differently hidden area. It is important to carefully identify such areas and carry out an effective eye-opening procedure.
