Today, I’ll talk about some things that are good to know before getting rhinoplasty in Gangnam.

Important Points in Rhinoplasty

When doing rhinoplasty, what is important is not an “absolute value” but a “ratio.”

And when creating the nose, the basic principle is that the anatomical structure should be clearly visible.

What does it mean that “the anatomical structure should be clearly visible” here?

Our brain has a separate process for recognizing human faces.

Through various papers and experiments, it has been shown that compared with simply distinguishing ordinary objects or finding differences, with human faces, even if only a small change is made, we can immediately catch where the change occurred.

These things instinctively affect the way humans recognize faces.

In particular, because the nose is at the center of the face, even a slight change in shape can be noticed quickly by the other person.

That is why, when performing nose surgery, it is not done according to a single standard, but customized surgery is needed to match each patient’s characteristics.

Rhinoplasty: What’s Different Between the Past and the Present

In the past, when performing nose surgery, without concepts such as the nasal bone, nasal cartilage, or nasal skin, the skin was simply opened and silicone was placed in a straight line inside.

Then, because the nose rose when viewed from the side, it was simply thought that it would definitely look better.

However, when you look at people who have recently had straight silicone inserted, the areas that should look like bone should appear like bone, and the areas that should look like cartilage should appear like cartilage, but because that structure is gone, it often just looks like chalk.

For that reason, rhinoplasty has shifted toward operating on the bony areas to make them look like bone and on the cartilage areas to make them look like cartilage.

The surgery has evolved into a method that places silicone in the bony area and uses cartilage that can be used in the cartilage area to create control of the cartilage.

The Difference Between Nasal Bridge and Tip Implants

So, when having surgery at a place that does good Gangnam rhinoplasty, the procedure is basically divided into two parts: the hard part, such as the nasal bridge or bony framework, and the softer part, the cartilage area at the tip of the nose.

For the nasal bridge area, you ultimately need to place a hard material similar to bone, and among the available options, silicone is considered the most suitable, so silicone is commonly used.

On the other hand, for cartilage placed at the nasal tip, various materials can be used.

Broadly, the materials used at the nasal tip include materials that shape the tip and materials that build the nasal support column.

Among them, the material used to build the support column must be somewhat firm.

Difference in Nasal Tip Implants

Septal Cartilage

The first material most commonly used in Gangnam rhinoplasty is septal cartilage.

If a stronger structure is needed beyond that, rib cartilage is used.

Among rib cartilage options, there is autologous rib cartilage, where one’s own rib cartilage is directly harvested.

And there is donated rib cartilage, which is donated rib cartilage used in the body.

The pros and cons of using septal cartilage are that it is the cartilage located right next to the nasal tip cartilage, so it is the most similar to the nasal tip cartilage and causes the least sense of foreignness when inserted.

Also, because the septum is located right next to the nasal tip, the surgical area does not need to be expanded separately.

Since the septum must naturally be operated on during nose surgery, there is not much burden in using it.

The downside, however, is that the septum is relatively weak.

If a person’s septum is strong, it can raise the nasal tip sufficiently, but if it is weak, it may not be able to lift the nasal tip as much as desired or may not have enough strength to overcome firm skin.

Rib Cartilage

On the other hand, when rib cartilage is used, it is definitely firmer than the septum, so it has the advantage of allowing the support column to be built to the level desired, even if it requires some force.

The downside is that an additional surgery is needed to harvest the rib cartilage, which can be burdensome.

And in the case of rib cartilage, because we think of ribs as curved, its characteristics are somewhat different from those of our nose.

During surgery, the curved part is carefully straightened and the procedure is carried out, but because of its tendency to curve again unexpectedly, it may bend over time, which can be a drawback.

Functional Rib Cartilage

A method that compensates for the drawback of needing additional surgery is the use of functional rib cartilage.

After all, donated rib cartilage is also a type of rib cartilage, so its characteristics are inevitably a bit different from those of nasal cartilage.

When using one’s own cartilage, it is harvested and used immediately, so there is no chemical processing for preservation in between, but with donated rib cartilage, the drawback is that chemical processing has been done for preservation.

These can be seen as the pros and cons of the materials used to build the nasal support column.
