As with any surgery,
it is best if the surgery goes well,
but
the results can also vary depending on
postoperative care.
The same goes for double eyelid surgery.
Among patients who visit our clinic,
there are not many who decide on surgery
in a short period of time.
They usually make the decision only after
careful consideration,
so if the result is not what they wanted,
it is only natural to feel disappointed.
Therefore, at our clinic,
we do our best for each and every patient
during surgery.
But if, after going home, you do not properly follow
the postoperative care instructions provided by the clinic,
it can lead to results different from what was expected
before surgery.
Therefore, after double eyelid surgery,
practicing how to open your eyes
is very important.

For example,
think about our clothes.
If we do not fold clothes
and instead crumple them up and put them away,
they become wrinkled.
Wrinkled clothes are hard to smooth out
without ironing.
Double eyelid surgery is a procedure that
artificially makes the crease in the eye
more prominent.
Therefore, for the crease to settle more firmly after surgery,
it must continue to form like the wrinkles in crumpled clothes.

However, if your eyes are swollen after surgery,
and you keep from fully opening them, or if you use your forehead to open your eyes,
the artificially created double eyelid line
will not set and may instead flatten out.
In other words, it is like doing something
that is the complete opposite of the double eyelid
we artificially created.
Therefore, to help the double eyelid line
settle properly, you need to practice opening your eyes.

How long should you practice opening your eyes?
It is needed for about six months after surgery.
It is best to do it steadily
and habitually for six months.
At this time, it is best to practice opening your eyes
while using your forehead as little as possible.

When should you start after surgery?
It is best to start immediately after double eyelid surgery.
Even if you have stitches,
it is best to start right away.
In particular, practicing opening your eyes is more necessary
with the incision method.
The methods of double eyelid surgery
are divided into non-incision and incision methods,
and although the results are similar,
the non-incision method creates adhesion through stitches.
By contrast, the incision method creates adhesion through an incision, so
with the incision method, the force of adhesion must be stronger than with stitches.
That is why the crease must be made more firmly
for adhesion to form well.
Therefore, compared with the non-incision method,
the incision method may benefit more from eye-opening exercises.

Can using your forehead to open your eyes be improved through eye surgery?
Usually, in cases of ptosis,
or even when it is not ptosis,
people whose eyes are very droopy sometimes use their forehead
habitually to open their eyes
in order to expose the dark part of the eye.
Of course, through double eyelid surgery or ptosis correction,
when the field of vision becomes wider,
people naturally use their forehead less.
But that does not mean
you can stop moving your forehead altogether.
That is because when people talk,
some forehead movement is needed to express their intentions to the other person.
If the forehead becomes too fixed,
it may look unnatural, like a robot.

Therefore, even after surgery,
using your forehead a little can be helpful.
If you become obsessed with the idea of
'not using your forehead,'
then simply opening your eyes may give off an AI-like feeling,
so using your forehead to a certain extent naturally is fine.
However, soon after surgery,
it is better to avoid using your forehead as much as possible,
and once the line has settled to some extent,
it is fine.

When can you get forehead Botox after double eyelid surgery?
At our clinic, we do not recommend forehead Botox if possible
for a more natural change in facial expression.
As mentioned earlier,
if Botox blocks the nerves in the forehead
and artificially prevents movement,
it may look unnatural.
So for facial Botox,
we generally do not recommend it except for
the eye area, between the eyebrows, and the chin.

Today, we took some time to learn
why practicing how to open your eyes
after double eyelid surgery
is important.
