Hello,
this is Obje Plastic Surgery Clinic.
Have your eyelids started to droop with age,
making your vision feel obstructed,
or have you been told that you look sleepy?
Because of this, many people are now
looking into brow lift clinics.
Even while researching surgery,
many people still hesitate to decide right away
because they worry, “What if it looks obvious?”
In fact, during consultations at a brow lift clinic,
we often hear,
“I want a natural improvement,
but I don’t want it to look obvious.”
Also, many people are confused
because the difference from upper blepharoplasty
is not very clear.
So today, we’ll explain how these two methods differ,
along with the advantages and limitations of a brow lift.
If you read this to the end,
you may be able to decide which method
is better suited to you.
What’s the difference between the two surgeries?

If you’re reading this,
you probably want to lift drooping eyelids
and tidy up the sagging skin.
There are two methods that can help with this.
One is the brow lift we’re discussing today,
and the other is the upper blepharoplasty
that many people are familiar with.

First, upper blepharoplasty involves making an incision
along the double-eyelid line,
removing the excess sagging tissue,

and then making the double eyelid crease
clear and refined again.

On the other hand, a brow lift involves making an incision
just below the eyebrow, which is higher up,

and selectively removing only the sagging skin
of the upper eyelid.

But why do some people have incisions
along the double-eyelid line,
while others have them under the eyebrow?
To understand this difference,
you first need to look at the structural characteristics
of the skin around the eyes.
Eyelid skin is among the thinnest on the body.
By contrast, as you move from the skin near the eyelashes
up toward the eyebrow,
the skin gradually becomes thicker.
Between the eyebrow area and the eyelash area,
there is naturally an intermediate-thickness layer of skin.

Therefore, how smoothly the thicker skin near the eyebrow
connects with the thinner skin near the eyelashes
determines the natural look of the eyes
and the overall impression.
If upper blepharoplasty removes that intermediate-thickness skin,
and the thicker eyebrow-side skin and thinner eyelash-side skin
end up meeting directly,
it can create a feeling of a sharp break in the boundary.
That is why a brow lift is recommended for people
whose skin is thick or who have a lot of fat,
for whom upper blepharoplasty might look awkward.
Because the incision is made along the line just below the eyebrow,
it can tidy up the sagging area while preserving
a natural flow in skin thickness.

In other words, if you want to improve drooping eyes
while also achieving a more natural and softer impression,
a brow lift can be a good choice.
Is it good for everyone?
At this point, you might think,
“Then is a brow lift the best option?”
But that is not always the case.

In particular, for people with thin skin above the eyes,
or those with hollow upper eyelids,
this method may actually make the awkwardness
stand out even more.
As mentioned earlier, a brow lift involves making an incision
below the eyebrow
and selectively removing only the sagging part
of the upper eyelid.
For people with thin skin,
the remaining skin is pulled upward,
becoming tighter,
and the hollow area below it may become more pronounced.

As a result, fine wrinkles may become more noticeable.
So in such cases, an incision along the double-eyelid line
(upper blepharoplasty) may actually produce a more natural result.
Because the incision is made along the eyelid line,
it does not force thin skin upward,
and only the sagging tissue can be adjusted naturally.
Ultimately, what matters is this:
it is not possible to say that one of the two surgeries
is universally better.
The better option differs for each person
depending on skin thickness, elasticity, and the degree of hollowing.
That is why it is most important to receive an accurate diagnosis
of your eye condition
and choose the surgical method that matches it.
Please keep that in mind.
Two additional points to consider
Beyond what we have discussed so far,
there are several points
that should also be considered.
First, the location of the scar.

Since this is an incision surgery,
it is difficult to completely avoid scarring.
So in the case of a brow lift,
surgeons often perform the operation along the line just below the eyebrow
so that the scar is hidden and not easily visible.
But what if a person’s eyebrows are naturally very sparse?
If the eyebrows do not sufficiently cover the incision line,
a thin line may be visible when you are not wearing makeup.

In such cases, tattooing may be needed
to help compensate.

Second, the range of sagging improvement
may be limited.
This is a point that surprisingly many people overlook.
A brow lift, as the name suggests,
is a procedure that makes an incision only along the line just below the eyebrow.
Because of this, sagging in the central part of the eye
can be improved effectively,
but improvement in the inner eye area
toward the glabella, or the outer side
toward the temple, may be somewhat limited.
That is because the pulling direction is vertical,
so the force is transmitted best to the central area,
while the ends spread diagonally,
which weakens the pulling effect there.
Simply put, it is similar to tidying a blanket:
if you pull only from the center,
wrinkles near the corners
may remain as they are.
You need to know this as well
in order to make a decision about sagging correction
without regret.
So far, we have looked at the differences between the two surgeries,
as well as the advantages and limitations of a brow lift.
The two surgeries clearly differ
in incision location and surgical method,
and the results can vary significantly
depending on eyelid thickness and the direction of wrinkles.
For people with thicker eyelid skin,
a brow lift may be effective,
but for people with thin skin,
another procedure such as upper blepharoplasty
may be more suitable.
Therefore, when looking for a brow lift clinic,
a precise diagnosis that carefully examines
the patient’s condition is more important than anything else.
