Can dark circles be treated with lower eyelid fat repositioning?
Director Kim Hyun-jo’s answer!

Hello.
This is Objet Plastic Surgery.
Even when you get enough sleep,
you can still look tired because of dark circles,
and if they quickly show through again
even after covering them with makeup,
it can be very bothersome.
When you start looking for information
about how to deal with dark circles,
you may come across the advice:
“People with severe dark circles should get lower eyelid fat repositioning.”

When many people hear this for the first time,
they cannot immediately understand it.
It seems like the problem is the skin color under the eyes,
so it is hard to connect that with a surgery
that works by adjusting fat.
That is why today, as a dark circle surgery,
we will explain directly why lower eyelid fat repositioning is chosen.
I will go over, one by one,
what principle improves dark circles
and whether dark circles can be completely improved.
If you read until the end,
you may find an answer to your dark circle concerns.
Dark circles are caused by “skin color”?
Actually, it could be caused by “this”
The causes of dark circles
are more varied than you might think.

In some cases, the skin is actually darker
due to pigmentation,
in others, the skin is thin
and blood vessels show through,
and in some cases, the skin sags with aging,
making the area look darker.
Among these, there is a type of dark circle
caused by structural reasons,
and in that case, lower eyelid fat repositioning is effective.

If you look closely under the eyes,
there is an area that runs across the under-eye area next to the nose
and looks like a hollow groove.
If fat bulges above this area,
a shadow naturally forms below the protruding fat boundary.
Because the depth of this shadow changes
depending on the direction of light,
it can look darker outdoors, or
even appear especially dull under the eyes
each time you take a photo.
It is not because the skin itself is darker,
but because of this structural shadow.
So even if you cover it with concealer
or foundation,
it can show again depending on the angle.

At this point, lower eyelid fat repositioning
moves the protruding fat
into the hollow area below,
and proceeds by smoothing the under-eye contour.
As the contour becomes less pronounced,
the shadow is reduced,
and the impression of darkness under the eyes can improve.

This is why lower eyelid fat repositioning
is chosen as a dark circle surgery.
What if the dark circles have another cause?
Two solutions
For dark circles caused by structural reasons,
lower eyelid fat repositioning is effective,
but if the cause is different,
additional methods
may be needed together.

Let me introduce the two main cases
that commonly appear.
The first is when the face itself
lacks volume.
Lower eyelid fat repositioning is a method that
simply moves existing fat to a different location.
Therefore, if the face as a whole
lacks volume,
there may be areas that are not filled sufficiently
even after repositioning alone.
In that case, the method used for supplementation
is single fat cell grafting (SFG).
A typical fat grafting procedure
adds fat in clumps,
so in the under-eye area, where the skin is thin
and movement is frequent,
it can be difficult for the fat to settle evenly.

On the other hand, single fat cell grafting
separates fat into individual cells and injects them,
so even in a delicate area like the under-eye area,
volume can be filled naturally and evenly.
Rather than thinking of it as a replacement for lower eyelid fat repositioning,
it is better understood as a supplementary method
that fills in areas still lacking after repositioning.
The second is when there is
pigmentation on the under-eye skin.
If the under-eye structure is not the problem,
but the skin tone itself is dark,
even if the fat is rearranged as much as possible,
the dark appearance may remain.
In this case,
because the pigmentation itself needs to be improved,
we consider combining laser treatment.

Of course, lower eyelid fat repositioning and laser treatment
have different purposes,
and sometimes only one of them is needed,
while in other cases they are performed together.
Also, even if they look like the same dark circles,
the cause may be different,
so it is best to decide which method is needed
after directly checking the under-eye condition.
Today, as a dark circle surgery,
we explained why lower eyelid fat repositioning is chosen
and the cases where the method changes depending on the under-eye condition.
If the dark circles are caused by shadow,
they can be improved with lower eyelid fat repositioning,
if volume is lacking,
single fat cell grafting may also be needed,
and if the problem is skin color,
we approach it by combining laser treatment.
In the end, what matters most is
understanding why your under-eye area looks dark.

Only when the cause is identified accurately
can the right method be determined accordingly.
If you have been carrying the same concern for a long time,
I recommend taking some time
to properly examine your under-eye condition.
Director Kim Hyun-jo of Objet Plastic Surgery
looks at changes in the under-eye skin
along with dark circle concerns,
and after closely checking the under-eye structure and skin condition,
suggests the direction suited to each condition.

If you are considering dark circle surgery,
the first step is to identify
the cause of your own under-eye area.
This has been Objet Plastic Surgery.
Thank you.
