How Can Lower Eyelid Scar Scarring Be Minimized?
Director Kim Hyun-jo’s <Care Methods>

Hello.
This is Obje Plastic Surgery.
When thinking about lower eyelid surgery,
the part that weighs on your mind the most
is the scar.
The area under the eyes is one of the first places
people notice when facing someone else,
so even the smallest trace
can easily draw the eye.
Did you know that there are things
patients can personally manage
to help reduce the marks left behind?

Today, we will organize the points
that can be managed even before surgery
to help keep lower eyelid scars
as subtle as possible.
If you read to the end,
you’ll have a clear checklist
for before your consultation.
Lower eyelid scars,
The <starting point> that creates differences in results
Even when the same lower eyelid procedure is performed,
the appearance after recovery
can end up looking slightly different.
Among the factors that influence this difference,
often mentioned is
“bleeding management.”

If there is a lot of bleeding during surgery,
it can become difficult for the medical team
to clearly see the tissue,
and if visibility is not well secured,
there is a greater chance that handling the tissue
may accumulate irritation.
If bleeding continues even after surgery,
blood can collect in the space beneath the skin,
which may lead to a “hematoma.”
Blood that has pooled
can increase inflammatory reactions
during the recovery process,
and if inflammation lasts longer,
the time it takes for marks to fade
also tends to become longer.
In the end, if you want lower eyelid scars
to heal smoothly,
“bleeding management”
plays an important role.
What is the key to bleeding management?
It may be “one pill”
If you are taking any medication regularly,
it needs to be checked before surgery.
Certain medications
slow the speed at which blood clots
or make blood flow more smoothly inside blood vessels.

They may be helpful for health in everyday life,
but in the context of surgery,
they can also act as factors
that affect bleeding tendency.

Typical examples include
“anticoagulants,” which slow the clotting process,
and “platelet aggregation inhibitors,”
which prevent platelets from clumping together.
Aspirin-type medications,
which are commonly known,
are included here.

In addition,
fever reducers, pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs,
and blood flow improvers
may also act in a similar direction,
so they are often classified as medications
that need to be adjusted before surgery.

These medications are generally considered
for discontinuation starting a certain period
before surgery.
The exact timing may vary depending on
the type of medication being taken
and the patient’s health condition.

If you have been taking a medication consistently
for a chronic condition,
stopping it carelessly may cause other health problems,
so you should first consult the medical team
and decide when to adjust it.
For women,
oral contraceptives and hormone medications
may also be subject to adjustment.
For these, it is better to receive consultation
with a bit more time before the surgery date.
Here is one area that is easy to miss.

It is health functional foods.
Products containing red ginseng, omega-3,
and various herbal ingredients
can be easy to dismiss with the thought,
“Since it’s not medicine, it should be fine,” but
depending on the ingredients,
they may affect bleeding tendency.
Red ginseng contains ingredients
that act on blood circulation,
and omega-3 can affect
the speed at which blood clots.
Before surgery,
it is better to discuss these supplements
as well and consider pausing them temporarily.
If I just don’t take medication, will that be enough?
Please check these parts too
The next thing to look at after medication
is lifestyle habits.

In particular, smoking and drinking
can affect the entire recovery process.
The components in cigarettes
constrict peripheral blood vessels.
This means narrow blood vessels,
such as those in the fingertips and toes,
become tighter.
Skin recovery also depends on these small blood vessels
to deliver oxygen and nutrients,
which is what allows smooth healing.

However, if blood vessels become narrower,
oxygen supply decreases,
and in an environment where oxygen is insufficient,
the speed at which wounds heal may slow down.
If recovery progresses slowly,
the time it takes for marks to fade
tends to be delayed as well.
Therefore, if you have decided on lower eyelid surgery,
maintaining no smoking for a certain period
before and after surgery
is helpful for the recovery environment.
Alcohol affects things in a different way.
Alcohol can dilate blood vessels
and increase bleeding tendency.

If you go into surgery
while feeling run down on the day of the procedure,
it is easy to lack energy from the very start of recovery,
so we recommend avoiding alcohol
for about a week before and after surgery.
There is one more thing to note:
if you have had filler in the under-eye area,
you must tell us this during the consultation stage.

If filler is present,
it becomes difficult to accurately evaluate
the condition of the under-eye area before surgery.
During surgery,
a step to remove or organize the filler
may also be added,
and in this process,
the tissue will be handled more than usual.
The more the tissue is handled,
the more areas need to recover,
so it is best not to leave out
a history of filler during your consultation.

If you have taken care of these points,
half of the recovery environment
has already been prepared.
The skin under the eyes
is relatively thin,
and since the surgical incision often settles
along a wrinkle line,
as recovery progresses,
it tends to settle down more gently,
so there is no need to worry too much.
However, recovery speed can vary
depending on skin type and constitution,
and the pre-surgery management discussed today
can make a real difference in reducing that variation.
Please keep that in mind.
Today, we organized the items
that should be taken care of before surgery
to help keep lower eyelid scars as subtle as possible.

Bleeding management,
checking medications and supplements,
and organizing smoking, drinking, and procedure history
all come together
to create the recovery environment,
and they affect the process of marks settling down.
If you are preparing for a consultation,
make a small note of the medications you are taking,
the supplements you regularly use,
the procedures you have recently had,
and your smoking and drinking frequency.
Doing so will make the pre-surgery check much easier.
Director Kim Hyun-jo of Obje Plastic Surgery
carefully handles tissue on the day of surgery
with a flow that minimizes bleeding,
and also provides detailed guidance during recovery
so that swelling and bruising do not linger for too long.
If you are hesitating because you are worried
about lower eyelid scars,
first take a careful look at your skin condition
and lifestyle habits.
And based on that information,
we recommend having a thorough consultation
with the medical team.
