When I am asked
why I chose dermatology,
I always end up giving
a similar answer.
The skin is the largest
organ in our body,
and at the same time,
it is a tissue that is
revealed without hiding.
Just by looking at a person’s complexion,
we can gauge their condition
to some extent,
which is why the skin is also
an indicator that reflects
the state of the whole body.
That is why I think dermatology is
the most straightforward and
direct field, one where you can
diagnose directly with your eyes
and hands,
and show specificity.

The 3-second difference
The point at which a specialist and a non-specialist diverge
In dermatology training,
doctors repeatedly train
to judge lesions within a very short time.
In some cases,
the process of distinguishing whether
a skin disease is present
may happen within 3 seconds.
This process is not simply
a difference in experience,
but one that creates a difference
in the very way skin is interpreted.
And I think this is a specificity
of dermatology care that is
difficult to be completely replaced
by computers or remote systems.
Even for the same lesion,

because the approach can vary depending on
a person’s skin characteristics,
their current condition,
and their lifestyle.
At Gangnam Station JM Dermatology,
we see these differences
not as mere “experience,”
but as criteria for diagnosis.

This is a slightly different story
What is disappointing in dermatology care
When treating patients in the clinic,
there are certainly parts
that leave me with a sense of regret.
There are not a few cases where procedures are performed
while claiming expertise
even though the provider is not a board-certified dermatologist,
or where care is instead delivered in a low-cost,
factory-like structure
because the high cost creates a barrier to entry.
In a structure where the patient chooses the procedure
and the doctor simply repeats it in a fixed manner,
there is also the possibility that the procedure proceeds
without sufficient interpretation of the skin condition.
This kind of approach can make
the skin seem like nothing more than
a single result.

A standard that does not compromise
One of the most important standards
I value while treating patients
is sustainability.
I believe that approaches that place a burden on the skin
when repeated many times,
or that only bring temporary change,
need to be judged carefully.
That is because, for the skin,
a direction that remains stable over time
is more important than short-term change.
Not every procedure is always
the right answer.
In some cases,
an approach that leaves signs of treatment
or emphasizes artificial change
may be more appropriate
to avoid.

Representatively,
some filler procedures
(front cheekbones, chin, aegyo-sal, etc.)
may fall far from a natural result
if a person’s facial structure
is not sufficiently considered,
so careful judgment is necessary.
At Gangnam Station Dermatology,
what not to do
is also seen as an important standard,
just as much as what to do.

When patients leave the clinic,
I hope they can feel something like this:
“This place accurately understands my skin,
customizes treatment specifically for me,
and the difference in results is enough
to distinguish it from other clinics...”
Not just that I received a procedure,
but that I experienced care
designed in a way that fits me.
And I hope that this process
is trusted not as a sensory judgment,
but as something carried out
based on scientific evidence.
I hope that even this part
can be conveyed.

Adding science to beauty
The skin cannot be explained
by visible results alone.
Only when diagnosis, interpretation,
and approach all work together
do differences in outcomes begin to appear.
At Gangnam Station Dermatology,
we view the skin not as a simple target for procedures,
but as an area that must be understood and designed.
And at the center of that,
there is always the same standard.
Adding science to beauty.
As long as this standard does not waver,
the direction of care
will not change greatly either.

Today’s skin
is affected by more than people think.
That is because it reflects sleep,
physical condition, and even small daily habits.
At JM Dermatology near Gangnam Station,
we take these everyday changes into account
and continue providing care that is not excessive,
but calm and suited to the skin’s current condition.
Rather than making big changes,
we focus on understanding the skin correctly as it is now.
That small difference ultimately
creates a difference in results.
