To me, good medical care is not about
dramatically changing something,
but is closer to the process of understanding
and discovering a person’s beauty together.
That is why, even in the consultation room,
I consider the question “What would you like us to do?”
less important than asking,
“What concerns you the most?”
As a board-certified dermatologist,
I do not believe that caring for the skin
is simply a matter of
looking at one part of the skin.
It means considering together
what condition a person’s skin is in now,
what concerns them,
and how it may change in the future.
What concerns you the most, rather than what would you like us to do?
There are many different reasons
people visit a dermatology clinic.
For some, it may be loss of firmness;
for others, skin texture or
pores may be their concern.
There may also be things that
have bothered someone for a long time,
even if they do not appear to be
a significant problem to others.
That is why I try not to approach a consultation
with a predetermined answer from the start.
First, I listen to what the patient
is most concerned about.
Then I look at that concern
together with the condition of the skin.
I believe it is important to consider together
what is needed now,
as well as what may not be necessary to do.
That is because I believe a consultation
does not begin when a procedure is selected,
but when the patient’s concerns are heard.

What matters in care provided by a board-certified dermatologist
When talking about concerns regarding the skin,
we naturally begin to think about various treatments
and procedures.
However, I believe that in a consultation,
what not to do is just as important
as what to do.
Is it truly necessary given the current condition of the skin?
Is it necessary at this point in time?
Or would it be better to monitor the situation a little longer?
These judgments are also an important part of care.
Even when people have the same skin concern,
the same approach is not necessary for everyone.
This is because everyone’s skin condition is different,
the nature of their concerns is different,
and the way their skin changes over time
is different as well.
That is why JM Dermatology Clinic considers it important
not to decide on one procedure and
make the skin fit it, but to look at the skin first
and consider an approach suited to it.

The beauty JM Dermatology Clinic envisions is natural harmony rather than dramatic change
I think beauty may be like that as well.
It is not something completed alone,
but something we look at, consider, and discover together with someone else.
The beauty I envision is somewhat different
from shaping oneself to fit a particular standard.
Each person already possesses their own beauty,
and it is closer to a process of considering
how to understand and express it naturally.
That is why, in a consultation, rather than simply using
“Do you look more beautiful?” as the standard,
I try to look together at
what condition the skin is in now,
what the concerns are,
what changes are needed,
and how it may change over time.
In the end, I believe what matters is not just a single change,
but understanding and appreciating
a person’s beauty over time, together.

The meaning of accompanying patients in care at JM Dermatology Clinic near Gangnam Station
To me, medical care is about more than treatment;
it is closer to accompanying someone on their journey.
Looking at skin concerns together,
thinking together, and finding
the most natural beauty.
Of course, a doctor does not decide
every answer on the patient’s behalf.
I believe it is a process of listening to
the patient’s concerns and desired direction,
adding the professional judgment of a board-certified dermatologist,
and finding the way forward together.
Sometimes, it may be necessary
to do something right away,
while at other times,
waiting a little may be the better choice.
Discussing that judgment together
and finding a direction the patient can understand and accept—
I believe that is one of the important roles
a primary doctor can fulfill.

A short while ago,
one of my patients returned from
a trip to Japan and
gave me a small gift.
There is something very warm about
giving someone a small item
happened upon by chance while traveling.
The item itself may be special,
but perhaps what stays with us even more
is the sentiment that comes with it:
“I thought of you when I saw this.”
There are similar moments when reading a book.
Sometimes I come across a sentence
that feels too meaningful to simply read alone and move on from,
making me think,
“I would like to talk about this sentence with someone.”
When we discover something good,
rather than keeping it to ourselves,
we want to show it to someone,
talk about it together,
and think about its meaning
once again.

Perhaps beauty does not begin
with finding the right answer,
but with looking at something
for a long time.
And if we can spend that time
with someone rather than alone,
might we be able to find
a slightly better direction?
In that sense, medical care to me
is something closer to companionship
than simply treatment.
Looking together at the concerns held by your skin,
thinking together,
and finding the most natural beauty.
Adding science to beauty.
And at the beginning of it all,
I believe there is always
a small reflection born from the desire
to look at and understand one person over time.

FAQ
Q1. What does JM Dermatology Clinic consider most important during consultations?
JM Dermatology Clinic considers it important to first listen to what concerns the patient most. After that, we examine the condition of the skin together and provide care by considering both what is currently needed and what may not be necessary.
Q2. Can the direction of care differ even for the same skin concern?
Yes. Since skin conditions, the nature of concerns, and the way they change over time differ from person to person, the necessary approach may differ even for the same skin concern.
JM Dermatology Clinic considers it important to look at the skin first and determine what is needed, rather than making the skin fit a predetermined procedure.
Q3. What does “accompanying patients in care” mean at JM Dermatology Clinic?
At JM Dermatology Clinic, accompanying patients means not unilaterally deciding on treatment or procedures, but looking together at the patient’s skin concerns and considering together what is needed and what direction to take in the future.
To me, medical care is closer to a process of understanding and discovering a person’s beauty together than simply providing treatment.
