How much do you know about the various methods of scar treatment?
Some people have scars from car accidents, industrial accidents, major surgeries such as cancer or tumor removal, or severe inflammation. If you look closely, it seems that everyone has at least one small scar. On the positive side, scars can be seen as a symbol of the vitality and recovery that kept us alive safely despite various dangerous situations. However, for those with severe scars, they can be a source of psychological distress and reduced confidence. In particular, treating scars on visible areas such as the hands, feet, face, or neck is an important medical field that goes beyond improving appearance and can enhance a patient's quality of life. Scars can also be treated with plastic surgery, but there are simple methods that can be used in dermatology, which we will introduce today.

Recently,
PN (Polynucleotide)
and PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide)
these two ingredients have been attracting attention
in the field of scar treatment.
Today, let's take a look at the differences between PN and PDRN, which are excellent for skin regeneration and wound healing, as well as their uses and usefulness in scar treatment.
Bellevue Clinic

What is the difference between PN and PDRN?
PN and PDRN are both DNA fragments extracted from salmon DNA and are substances that show skin regeneration and wound-healing effects. However, they differ slightly in molecular size and characteristics.
-
PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide): PDRN is a shorter DNA fragment with a smaller molecular weight than PN. It is quickly absorbed into the skin, promotes regeneration of damaged tissue, and helps form blood vessels, which accelerates wound healing. It is mainly used as an ingredient in pharmaceuticals or medical devices.
-
PN (Polynucleotide): PN is a longer DNA fragment with a larger molecular weight than PDRN. It has a similar mechanism of action to PDRN, but it tends to remain in the skin longer and produce more sustained effects. It also has a stronger ability to attract moisture than PDRN, so it may help improve skin hydration and elasticity. It is mainly used as an ingredient in medical devices.

To put it simply, you can think of the shorter strand as PDRN and the slightly longer strand as PN. Both are similar substances, but PDRN was used first, and it is a DNA substance extracted from salmon sperm (semen). PN is represented by Rejuran, which was launched domestically in 2015, and it is a DNA substance extracted from salmon testes. In other words, it is a substance extracted from highly vital germ cells, and although human placenta also contains it, fish-derived substances have emerged as an alternative due to ethical issues. One kilogram of salmon semen is needed to produce about 5,000 vials of the product, and the amount that can be collected from a single fish is only 10–15 ml. Moreover, since germ cells are not active in the sea, it is only possible to collect them from salmon caught when they return upstream during spawning season. In other words, these are not ingredients that are easy to obtain.

The role of PN and PDRN in scar treatment
PN and PDRN can be used to treat various types of scars, including severe abrasions, cuts, animal bite scars, acne scars, and thyroid surgery scars on the neck, and the following effects can be expected.
-
Promotes collagen and elastin production: PN and PDRN stimulate fibroblasts to promote the production of collagen and elastin. This helps rebuild the skin tissue in scar areas and restore elasticity, making scars appear less noticeable.
-
Promotes blood vessel formation: PN and PDRN increase the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which promotes angiogenesis. This supplies oxygen and nutrients to scar areas, helps tissue regeneration, and is effective in improving red scars.
-
Anti-inflammatory effects: PN and PDRN may help reduce redness, pain, and itching in scar areas by suppressing inflammatory responses. They may also help prevent the formation of keloid scars caused by excessive inflammatory responses.
-
Strengthens the skin barrier: PN and PDRN strengthen the skin barrier, protecting the skin from external irritation and preventing moisture loss to help keep scar areas hydrated. This can relieve dryness-related itching after scar treatment and contribute to better scar improvement.

Usefulness of PN/PDRN treatment by scar type
PN and PDRN are known to be especially effective for the following scars.
-
Acne scars: PN/PDRN may help fill in depressed acne scars and improve red acne marks by promoting collagen regeneration. They may also help smooth skin texture by promoting regeneration of skin tissue damaged by acne.
-
Surgical scars: PN/PDRN may help reduce red, raised scars that occur after surgery and soften skin tissue to improve the appearance of scars. In particular, they are known to be effective in preventing keloid scars. Some studies have reported that when PDRN injections were combined with laser treatment for thyroid surgery scars, there was a significant improvement in redness and thickness of the scars. This suggests that PDRN may play a positive role in improving thyroid surgery scars.
-
Burn scars: PN/PDRN may help promote regeneration of skin tissue damaged by burns and aid collagen production to reduce scar stiffness and make the tissue more flexible. They may also help reduce post-burn pigmentation.
-
Traumatic scars: PN/PDRN may help improve scars caused by accidents or injuries. They can promote collagen regeneration in scar areas and help form blood vessels, which may reduce redness in scars.

PN vs PDRN: Which should be chosen for scar treatment?
Both PN and PDRN are effective ingredients for scar treatment, but the appropriate treatment method should be selected by considering the type, depth, size of the scar, and the patient's skin condition. In general, PDRN may be more effective for acute wounds that need rapid regeneration or scars with strong redness, while PN may be more effective for chronic scars or large-area scars that need continuous collagen regeneration and improved skin elasticity. However, the effects of PN and PDRN can vary from person to person, and it is difficult to say that one ingredient is superior to the other. It is important to establish an appropriate treatment plan suited to your scar condition through 충분한 consultation. We hope that many people suffering from scars will regain confidence and return to a healthy life through PN and PDRN treatment. Thank you.
