One week after a procedure: why you should put your “home device” away for a while
One week after a procedure: why you should put your “home device” back in the drawer for a while
Did you start your energetic Monday well? Recently, as more people have been using home care devices (radiofrequency, EMS, galvanic, etc.), we often get asked whether they can be used right after a procedure. Dr. Bellvue’s answer is, “Absolutely not for at least one week.” Today, I’ll briefly explain why.

One week after a procedure: why you should put your “home device” away for a while
- The “overlap” and “overload” of thermal energy (after InMode, Shurink)
Have you ever had laser lifting procedures such as Thermage, Ultherapy, InMode, or Shurink? Those who have experienced them probably remember feeling heat during the procedure. These lifting procedures are heat-based treatments (radiofrequency, ultrasound) that deliver strong thermal energy deep into the skin to stimulate active regeneration. So there is already “beneficial damage (heat sensation)” left in the skin from the procedure.
What happens if you go home and additionally use a radiofrequency- or ultrasound-based home device? The outcome may vary somewhat depending on the user’s usage time or the machine’s settings, but... if heat accumulates beyond the threshold, it can cause burns, blisters, or severe dryness. To use an easy analogy, it’s like turning the heat back on while a pan that has already been heated is slowly cooling down. Food that was meant to cook nicely and be eaten can end up burning unnecessarily.

One week after a procedure: why you should put your “home device” away for a while
- “Inflammation” and “migration” caused by physical friction (after skin boosters, fillers)
In addition to laser lifting, if you have had injectable treatments such as Rejuran, Juvelook, or fillers, or thread lifting, you need to be even more careful. Home devices usually work by rubbing over the skin or pressing firmly against it. If such friction is applied, the ingredients that should settle between the tissues right after the procedure may be scattered by physical force (migrated), or bacteria may enter through needle marks and cause secondary infection. EMS devices that stimulate the muscles may interfere with Botox settling in place and reduce its effect. Therefore, after a dermatologic procedure, it is safest to avoid beauty devices for at least one week if possible.

- “Skin fatigue” caused by microcurrent and vibration
After a procedure, our skin is somewhat tired, startled, and pouring all its energy into healing itself. So while it will improve later, at the moment it is in a shocked state. The stimulation from galvanic or microcurrent devices can be good stimulation, or an appropriate boost, when the skin is normally relaxed. But for sensitive skin right after a procedure, it becomes “excessive stress.” This can instead slow regeneration and make redness last longer.

One week after a procedure: why you should put your “home device” away for a while
“Home devices are
for maintenance to help preserve the effects of a procedure,
not for treatment immediately after a procedure.”
For one week after a procedure, please definitely!!! stick to the basics only—[basic moisturization + sun protection]—so your skin can breathe and regenerate on its own. There is no need to rush into acupuncture massage, massage, or home devices until the skin barrier has fully recovered. If your skin is sensitive and its regenerative ability is significantly reduced, it is better to allow yourself 1–2 more weeks of rest. Skin recovery varies a lot from person to person, so it would be safest to decide after consulting with a doctor... but in general, many people can use them without difficulty after about a month. Thank you for reading today’s post to the end.
