Breast Augmentation Implant Complications
Four Common Types
Bongbong Plastic Surgery

Hello, this is Bongbong Plastic Surgery.
One reason people who are considering breast augmentation sometimes think about it for a long time is the complications of a “poorly performed breast augmentation”!
It is important to understand the complications of breast augmentation in detail, know how to prevent them, and then proceed with the procedure.
Today, let’s look at the four common complications of breast augmentation and find out what is most important for breast surgery and how to respond to them.

- Capsular contracture

Capsular contracture is a phenomenon that occurs when, after a breast implant is inserted, the surrounding tissue forms excessively thick fibrous tissue around the implant.
As a result, the implant hardens and may become unnaturally distorted. In severe cases, the breast can feel hard and pain may occur.
Capsular contracture is one of the most common complications after implant surgery, and to address it, implant removal, replacement, or additional surgery may be necessary.
- Seroma

A seroma refers to a condition in which fluid abnormally accumulates at the surgical site. It occurs in some people after breast implant surgery and is more likely to appear in the early stage after surgery.
A seroma causes discomfort and increases the risk of infection. Small seromas may be naturally absorbed, but large seromas may require aspiration with a syringe or surgical treatment.
- Implant rupture

Implant rupture can occur when a silicone or saline-filled implant is damaged by external impact or over time. In the case of saline implants, if rupture occurs, the fluid leaks out and the breast size rapidly decreases, making it immediately noticeable.
On the other hand, silicone implants do not show much change in shape when they rupture, so regular checkups are recommended. A ruptured implant needs to be replaced even if it does not have a major effect on health.
- Asymmetry

Asymmetry after breast augmentation refers to a condition in which the size, shape, or position of both breasts does not match. This may stem from preexisting asymmetry before surgery, and it can also occur when implant placement is unbalanced during surgery. Mild asymmetry is common, but severe asymmetry may require corrective surgery.

To prevent these complications, consultation with an experienced plastic surgery specialist and regular checkups are important.
If complications occur, prompt response is important, and post-surgery care is also very important. If you would like to know more, please check the video below.
