Causes of a Scratchy Throat
Management and Prevention

Sometimes a scratchy throat can be uncomfortable,
and it may become difficult to speak or swallow due to the irritation.
There are various causes of a scratchy throat. It can also occur after smoking,
when speaking for a long time, or when the throat becomes itchy after dehydration.
Today, let’s look at the different causes that can trigger a scratchy throat,
along with ways to manage and prevent the symptoms.

First, one reason a scratchy throat occurs is allergic rhinitis,
which refers to a condition in which the inside of the nose has an allergic reaction to certain substances,
causing symptoms such as a scratchy throat and runny nose.
Symptoms can appear due to irritants such as pollen, dust, or cigarette smoke,
and in addition to a scratchy throat, symptoms such as sneezing and nasal congestion may also occur.
A scratchy throat can also occur in cases of food allergies,
which is when our body’s immune system judges a certain food to be harmful and shows an excessive reaction.

In the case of an allergic reaction, it usually occurs within a few minutes or a few hours after consuming allergy-triggering foods such as peanuts, shellfish, or crustaceans,
and is accompanied by symptoms such as a scratchy throat and runny nose.
A scratchy throat can also occur due to a drug allergy,
and if the throat feels itchy immediately after taking a medication or if the reaction is severe, it can be life-threatening.
A scratchy throat may also occur due to laryngitis,
which means inflammation of the larynx, an organ that plays an important role in speaking and breathing.

When laryngitis occurs, coughing may be accompanied by a sound like a jar resonating,
and symptoms such as throat pain, a scratchy throat, and a hoarse voice may also be present.
Bacterial and viral infections can also be the cause of this symptom,
and viruses such as those that cause colds or the flu can also trigger a scratchy throat.
With a simple cold, only mild pain may occur,
but if you catch the flu, throat pain can become severe and may be accompanied by fever or body aches.

Because a scratchy throat can occur for many different reasons like this,
it is important to identify the cause of the symptom and manage it accordingly.
If, beyond simply having a scratchy throat, you also have symptoms such as difficulty breathing, hives, severe sore throat, or difficulty swallowing,
you should visit a hospital and receive treatment.
Since this symptom can occur due to a food allergy reaction,
it is helpful for prevention to identify foods that trigger allergic reactions in advance and avoid consuming them.

If this symptom occurs due to a cold,
taking medication and then getting enough rest and fluids may help manage the symptom.
Also, because you may feel this symptom due to a dry environment,
it is helpful for prevention to maintain proper indoor humidity at all times.
