Hello! I am Kim Tae-yun, the chief director of Sinseong Dental Clinic, a dental clinic in Apgujeong.

Many people know that when tartar builds up, they need to get scaling at a dental clinic,
but many are not exactly sure why tartar needs to be removed or what problems can occur if it is left untreated.
Today, I will explain in detail the importance of tartar removal and scaling for maintaining healthy teeth.
What is tartar?

After we eat, plaque forms on the surface of our teeth.
Plaque is not simply food debris, but a mass of bacteria,
and over time it combines with the mineral components in saliva and hardens into “tartar.”

Tartar cannot be removed by brushing alone,
and it must be physically removed through professional scaling at a dental clinic.
Left untreated, tartar is not just a stain; it can become a major cause of gum health problems.
Problems that occur when tartar is left untreated
- A cause of gum disease (gingivitis, periodontitis)

tartar gradually hardens and works its way between the gums and teeth.
It also promotes plaque accumulation, becoming the main habitat for bacteria.
As a result, inflammation can develop in the gums, causing swelling, bleeding, and sensitive gingivitis.
If the tartar becomes more severe, the inflammation worsens and progresses to periodontitis,
and the jawbone may be destroyed, causing the teeth to loosen or even fall out.
- Causes bad breath (halitosis)

Countless bacteria live in tartar, and the toxins produced in this process cause bad breath.
When tartar is present, bad breath does not easily go away no matter how much you brush.
- Cavities and tooth discoloration

As tartar builds up, bacteria continue to multiply, increasing the risk of cavities.
In addition, pigments from coffee, tea, smoking, and similar factors can become deposited, worsening tooth discoloration.
Prevention tips

Removing tartar through regular scaling can effectively help prevent gum disease,
and because the tooth surface becomes cleaner, a natural whitening effect can also be expected.
Also, using a tongue cleaner along with scaling can help prevent bad breath.
How often should you get scaling?

Scaling is generally recommended once every 6 months to 1 year.
However, for people who develop a lot of tartar or are at high risk of gum disease, getting it every 3 to 6 months is better.
Did you know that scaling is covered once a year through the National Health Insurance benefit?
For your oral health, we recommend visiting a dental clinic at least once a year for scaling and a regular checkup.
