Hello.
I’m Ogana, a board-certified dermatologist with 16 years of experience.

Today, I’d like to talk about blackheads, the enemy of clean, “blemish-free” skin.

The structure of a pore
Blackheads are a skin concern closely related to pores. Many of you may have tried to remove them using nose strips or various cosmetics.
But can blackheads really be completely removed through home care alone?
Today, we’ll take a closer look at everything from how blackheads form and what causes them to effective home-care methods and the need for professional dermatological treatment.

Why do blackheads form?

Blackheads are closely related to pores.
Blackheads occur when pores become clogged and sebum oxidizes, making it appear black.
Sebum serves as a protective barrier for our skin, but excessive sebum production can clog pores and cause breakouts.

In particular, excessive sebum production is largely influenced by genetic factors.
If you naturally have oily skin and are prone to acne, you may also have developed blackheads.
But here’s what’s important!
If you have been careless with cleansing and neglected exfoliation, your blackheads would likely have gradually worsened.

In addition, habits such as frequently using a sauna, regularly eating spicy foods near high heat, or often being exposed to UV rays can cause pores to produce large amounts of sebum, gradually enlarging their openings.

Blackheads can develop for various reasons, including genetic factors and lifestyle habits.
Rather than trying to remove them completely, this concern should be improved through consistent care.
Home-care methods need to be reviewed!
Many people try home-care methods to manage blackheads.
Using petroleum jelly and cleansing oil to gently loosen and remove blackheads is relatively safe, but

excessive physical stimulation, such as using nose strips, can make pores appear larger.
Nose strips forcibly pull out blackheads, but this process can irritate the skin and cause inflammation, increasing the risk of enlarged pores.

A safer home-care method is to use a toner containing AHA or BHA to gently remove dead skin cells, then apply plenty of moisturizer to strengthen the skin barrier.

There are various home-care methods, but they have limitations. Treatment or professional procedures can be highly helpful when trying to remove blackheads more thoroughly.
What procedures are available for blackheads at a dermatology clinic?

The approach used for blackhead procedures at a dermatology clinic varies according to each person’s skin condition and pore type.
Common procedures for blackhead removal include Fraxel laser, Pico laser, radiofrequency devices, extractions, and chemical peels.

For younger patients with genetically high sebum production, we focus on cleansing-based skin care.
A medical professional first removes the blackheads safely, then uses a chemical peel to cleanse the pores and help them narrow naturally.

When pores become lax due to skin aging, simple cleansing alone has limitations.
In such cases, treatments that increase collagen levels may be appropriate. I’ll introduce two representative laser treatments below.

Fraxel laser
It helps regenerate the skin, improve firmness around the pores, and reduce pore size.
Radiofrequency laser
It delivers thermal energy deep into the skin to promote collagen production and restore skin firmness.
Consistent care suited to your skin type is important
Blackhead care is not a one-time process. Consistent management is necessary to see results.
In particular, it is important to choose a care routine suited to your skin type.

If you have oily skin, it is important to control sebum production and exfoliate regularly.
If you have dry skin, avoid excessive exfoliation and focus on moisturizing to strengthen the skin barrier.
For sensitive skin, use ingredients that are less irritating, and it is advisable to receive treatment after consulting a specialist.
Combining consistent care with appropriate treatment can improve not only blackheads but also the overall health of your skin.
