Today, I’d like to share information about the recovery period and surgical methods for revision rhinoplasty.

After nose surgery, many people ask when revision rhinoplasty is possible if they are unhappy with the result or if problems occur after surgery.

The answer most people hear when considering revision rhinoplasty is, “You need to wait 6 months.”

The background behind the “6 months” guideline is that, during surgery, normal tissue is cut with a scalpel and stitched back together, and for the operated area to reattach properly,

it goes through a wound-healing process inside the nose. On average, this healing process takes place over a period ranging from 2 weeks to 6 months.

When looking into revision rhinoplasty, you may have heard the term “early correction.” In cases where early correction is needed, revision surgery can be performed within 2 weeks. If the implant appears visibly bent, the nose is crooked, or inflammation has developed, early correction is generally possible at any time within 2 weeks. Also, after surgery, swelling and scar tissue develop and then subside, and that process takes an average of 6 months.

Of course, this can vary from person to person. For example, in the case of a thick-skinned bulbous nose, the recovery process may take longer, while for someone with thin skin and fast recovery,

it may be shorter. In fact, the timing of revision surgery is better the later it is done, beyond the 6 months mentioned earlier. However, after surgery,

when there is contracture, inflammation, or an unsatisfactory nose shape, waiting 6 months or even 1 year is not easy,

so to help shorten that period as much as possible, our clinic provides stem cell treatment.

What are stem cells? They are the most primitive cells and cells with great potential. As cells grow and divide, they can differentiate into various types of cells such as bone cells, blood vessel cells, skin tissue cells, and fat cells. Stem cells are found in the largest amounts in our bone marrow and in areas with abundant fat, and they are especially more concentrated in fatty tissue. Therefore, when providing stem cell treatment, the procedure is recommended for people with severe contracture or those who want to bring the timing of revision rhinoplasty forward a little after surgery.

How is stem cell treatment performed? Stem cell components are extracted from your own fat, and only the pure stem cells are filtered out. Then, using those cell injections,

injections are administered into areas where faster recovery is desired, such as scar tissue. The usual interval is about once a week,

and in cases where the treatment period is short, it may end in 2 months with twice-weekly sessions. In cases where treatment is extended, it may continue for about 6 months,

and depending on the individual’s condition, the treatment period may be longer. On average, revision rhinoplasty stem cell treatment takes about 4 months.

Patients often say that after stem cell treatment, the nose clearly moves more smoothly and becomes more flexible, and that the range of scarring and tissue affected by surgery

is reduced, making it feel closer to normal tissue in movement.

The advantages of stem cell treatment are that it can bring the timing of revision surgery forward and may lead to slightly better results after surgery.

Is stem cell treatment used only for revision rhinoplasty? No, it is not limited to revision rhinoplasty. It can also be used in cases of severe scarring due to accidents, trauma, and other reasons.

When performing stem cell treatment during revision rhinoplasty,

whether it can allow the nasal tip to be raised more advantageously, and similar claims, have not yet been clearly proven to be superior. Therefore, stem cell treatment can certainly be a good option for contracture-related nasal deformities, and even if you have not had surgery before, it can still help with scar treatment.
