Hello. I’m Dr. Jo Won-jin, and I’ve been practicing in Hongdae for 9 years.

It needs to calm down right away...
I’m in a hurry, so I’ll just get it done quickly somewhere nearby.
You may be looking for a clinic in a rush because of a large, swollen pimple before an important schedule.
However, if an anti-inflammatory injection is administered incorrectly, the acne may go down,
but it can leave a sunken scar in that spot,
and in severe cases, recovery may take several months.
Today, I’ll explain 3 things to check when you need an anti-inflammatory injection in Hongdae in a hurry,
and go over the criteria for preventing side effects such as pitted scars.

Table of contents
-
Is it really an "inflammatory" lesion?
-
The cause of pitting side effects

Why you should not rely on anti-inflammatory injections
-
Is it really an "inflammatory" lesion?
An anti-inflammatory injection uses a steroid ingredient called "triamcinolone"
to quickly "suppress" an excessive inflammatory response.
This means that it has no effect at all on areas without inflammation.
When I see patients in the clinic, there are cases where they want an injection for small, non-inflamed acne bumps or
sebaceous cysts that have not yet become suppurated.

The solution in the photo is diluted and injected into the acne area.
If you were to spray a powerful fire extinguisher on a place that hasn’t even caught fire yet,
injecting it into an area without inflammation would only cause unnecessary irritation with no effect.
Therefore, before the procedure, the medical staff must visually examine the area and gently feel it,
and accurately determine whether it is truly an "inflammatory lesion" that is red, raised, and accompanied by heat or pain,
which is the most basic first principle of an anti-inflammatory injection in Hongdae.
- The cause of pitting side effects
The skin-pitting side effects that patients worry about with anti-inflammatory injections in Hongdae are
mostly caused by an "excessive dose" or "incorrect depth."
If the medication is injected deeper than the dermis where the acne is located, into the fat layer,
or if too much is injected relative to the size of the lesion, the surrounding normal tissue also atrophies,
causing that area to become sunken.
※ The blue area in the photo below is the dermis.
You should make sure it does not go beyond the dermis and into the black area.

Even if a depression occurs after the procedure,
tissue atrophy caused by the medication usually recovers gradually on its own over 2 to 6 months.
But if a long time has passed and the sunken area has not returned at all,
it is more likely to be a "scar-related depression" caused by the acne itself rather than by the injection.
In that case, instead of waiting for recovery, it may be better to start separate scar treatment appropriate for the condition.
3. Why you should not rely on anti-inflammatory injections
The reason you should not rely on injections, even though they are effective for managing early pustular acne, is
that repeated injections in the same area increase the risk of various side effects.
Of course, anti-inflammatory injections are a great "first-aid" procedure.
But if acne keeps recurring in the same spot,
I do not recommend just getting injections and trying to get by.
The chance of the "depression" mentioned above increases,
and the capillaries may widen, making fine blood vessels visible on the face.
In addition, the dermis may become thinner, making the skin generally weaker and more sensitive.

It’s like wiping away the water that has collected on the floor,
even though water is leaking from the ceiling.
First aid is needed right away,
but the underlying cause must be found and fixed.
A person who recently came to me for an anti-inflammatory injection in Hongdae had
overdeveloped sebaceous glands themselves,
which were repeatedly blocking the pores.
In cases like this, fundamental improvement such as laser treatment to regulate sebum secretion may be needed.

Anti-inflammatory injections in Hongdae: just remember these 3 things
I understand very well how much stress a suddenly appearing breakout can cause.
But please review what I’ve said today once more.
-
Accurate diagnosis of whether it is a red, painful "inflammatory lesion"
-
Ability to control the "correct depth and dosage" to prevent skin pitting
-
Considering the "underlying cause" as well, beyond just first aid

Since this is about entrusting your precious skin,
please carefully evaluate these 3 criteria
and hope for a healthy recovery.
This has been Dr. Jo Won-jin of Chai Clinic.
Thank you.
