Hello, I’m Dr. Jo Won-jin, and I have been seeing patients for 10 years.

I’ve heard that if you keep getting Botox, you can develop resistance.
Do you have to get imported Botox instead of domestic products?
This is a question I hear very often in the clinic.
To get straight to the point, the domestic vs. imported distinction is no longer the key factor.
If you are worried about Botox resistance, it is better to check whether it is a “pure toxin” or not.
Under the topic of A Complete Guide to Domestic Botox Types, Imported Options, Differences in Effect, and Antibody Resistance,
I will explain the features of various domestic Botox products and how to choose one based on your purpose.
If you know just this before starting, you should be able to get stable results with domestic Botox.

Complex proteins that affect resistance
There are various causes of Botox resistance, but in terms of ingredients,
it occurs when the body recognizes the complex protein surrounding the toxin as a foreign substance and creates antibodies.
Think of it as unnecessary packaging.
What we need is the core ingredient (pure toxin),
but if the packaging (complex protein) keeps entering the body, our immune system
remembers that packaging as a foreign substance and starts attacking it (antibodies).
That is why products that remove this packaging entirely are called pure toxins.

In the past, imported Xeomin was the only option,
but recently many products with the same principle, such as domestic Coretox, have been introduced.
On the other hand, there are also long-verified classic product lines such as domestic Botulax and the imported original Allergan.
These products contain complex proteins,
but they have the advantage of offering proven effects at a reasonable cost.

Then, which product should you choose?
I will divide domestic Botox types into three main criteria based on the patient’s situation.
- When preventing resistance is the top priority: pure toxin
-
Features: By removing unnecessary complex proteins, the possibility of resistance development is dramatically reduced.
-
Representative products: Domestic Coretox, (imported) Xeomin
This is the first option I recommend for people who have already had several procedures and are worried about resistance,
for those who need a high dose for areas such as the square jaw or trapezius,
or for those who need ongoing treatment over a long period.

- When value for money and proven results matter: classic
-
Features: Because it has been on the market for a long time, it has accumulated the most clinical data and its effectiveness has been proven. Another major advantage is its reasonable cost.
-
Representative products: Domestic Botulax, Meditoxin, (imported) Allergan
This is suitable for those who want proven results at a reasonable cost in delicate areas such as the forehead, glabella, and crow’s feet.
However, with repeated procedures, the possibility of resistance should be considered.

- Other products with distinct features (credibility/purity/convenience)
Nabota (credibility): It was the first domestic product to receive FDA approval in the United States. This means it has been recognized for quality and safety in the global market.
Liztox (high purity): It emphasizes high purity and highlights the advantage of lowering side effects by reducing unnecessary proteins.
Innotox (convenience): It is the world’s first liquid-form product. Because there is no process of diluting powder with saline, precise dosing can always be performed without dilution error.

Key summary of domestic Botox types
If you are concerned about resistance:
If long-term treatment is needed, I recommend pure toxins such as Coretox (domestic) or Xeomin (imported).
If value for money matters:
Classic products such as Botulax, Meditoxin, and Allergan are also good choices.
If purity or credibility matters:
You can choose based on features such as Liztox, Nabota, and Innotox.

The simple idea that domestic products are cheap and imported products are better no longer makes sense.
When choosing among domestic Botox types, the most important thing is the patient’s treatment purpose and plan.
If value for money is important, choose a classic product!
If you will be receiving injections over the long term, choose a pure toxin!
In other words, the key is to choose the optimal product according to your own purpose (value for money or resistance prevention) and treatment plan (short-term or long-term).
