Hello, I’m Dr. Jo Won-jin, and I have been seeing patients for 10 years.

Can’t I get rid of it all at once, since it’s hard to come back many times?
You may want it gone quickly, but mole removal should be done slowly.
That is because if approached the wrong way, it can leave a permanent scar that is more unsightly than the mole itself.
Today, under the topic of "Hongdae mole removal: 3 things you need to know to remove it cleanly,"
I’ll summarize the essential criteria for removing moles cleanly without scars.

Table of Contents
- If you get greedy and try to do it all at once, a hole will remain
- The equipment should change depending on the shape of the mole
- It may be a disease, not just a simple mole

Hongdae mole removal
- If you get greedy and try to do it all at once, a hole will remain
The most important thing to be careful about when removing a mole is excessive greed.
Not long ago, a patient came in and asked me to remove a deep mole from the oval area in one go,
but later came back with a sunken scar in the middle of the cheek because the skin had not filled back in.

Just as digging the ground too deeply can cause the foundation to collapse,
if you fire a laser too deeply beyond the skin’s regenerative limits, an indented scar will remain.
Unfortunately, scars like this take much longer to treat and are more difficult to manage than the original mole.
That is why deep moles should be treated in 2 to 3 sessions, removing only as much as the skin can safely handle each time.

2. The equipment should change depending on the shape of the mole
Raised moles, flat but deep moles, especially red moles, and others all differ in color, depth, and characteristics.
Moles can be removed cleanly without scarring only when the most suitable device is chosen for each type.

First, the most common raised mole should be shaved down as if carving it away.
Because it is tissue protruding above the skin surface, an Er:YAG laser is used to
carefully flatten only the raised portion without damaging the surrounding skin.

On the other hand, a mole that looks flat on the surface but has a deep, dark root requires a different approach.
Rather than shaving the surface, the melanin pigment inside the skin must be targeted.
At this point, a Pico laser or Clarity is used,
to break up only the pigment in the deeper layers into small particles so it can be expelled.
Simply firing a laser without the right approach can make the mole darker or prevent proper removal.
If you want to know the proper way to remove it, please refer to the article below.

From here on, a more careful diagnosis is needed.
What is commonly called a red mole, or cherry angioma, is not pigment but a cluster of blood vessels.
In this case, only the clustered blood vessels should be selectively removed with a laser wavelength that responds only to hemoglobin.

A bluish mole is a case where the pigment is embedded very deeply in the dermis rather than in the epidermis.
If you try to remove it all at once out of impatience, a scar will definitely remain.
Even if it takes a bit more time, the way to remove it cleanly without scarring is to gradually lighten the deep pigment using a high-output laser.

I have explained it simply, but in actual treatment settings, all of these variables are considered,
generally combining 2 to 3 different devices for treatment.
That is the only way to minimize damage to the surrounding skin while precisely removing only the desired lesion.

3. It may be a disease, not just a simple mole
This is the most important part.
Even if it looks like just a black mole to you, it may appear different to a doctor.
There is also the possibility that it is not a simple mole but basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, melanoma, or a viral wart.

These dangerous lesions are often missed when you only talk about the cost with the coordinator and go straight into the procedure room,
or when treatment is done at a clinic that skips the medical staff’s detailed examination process.
If such a lesion is mistaken for a regular mole and simply burned off with a laser,
it can become a dangerous situation in which the disease worsens or spreads.

Therefore, when getting a mole removed, rather than focusing only on price or speed,
you should make sure that a doctor personally examines the lesion with a magnifying device before the procedure
and makes an accurate medical diagnosis.
I explained how to choose a dermatology clinic in more detail in the article below.
Summary and Closing
When it comes to Hongdae mole removal, rather than taking it lightly and going anywhere, please remember the 3 things I mentioned today.
- Safety first: Remember cases where trying to remove it all at once resulted in a sunken scar.
- Device combination: Customized devices must be used, such as Er:YAG for raised moles and pigment lasers for flat moles.
- Accurate diagnosis: Leave it to a doctor who can distinguish between a simple mole and a disease.
Even when removing just one mole, I hope you receive proper treatment at a place that values your skin.
Thank you. This was Jo Won-jin.
