Hello, I’m Dr. Jo Wonjin, and I’ve been seeing patients for 10 years.

Thermage is pretty expensive,
so what if you get it and it doesn’t work?
That’s a very natural concern, since it involves a significant cost.
To put it simply, Thermage is not a treatment that is good for everyone at any time.
There are specific skin types and timing when it can work properly.
Under the topic of When to Get Thermage in Hongdae for the Best Results,
I’ll clearly organize the three cases where it’s worth the money.
Table of Contents
- When your cheek feels like “this” when you pinch it with your hand
- When you don’t have much facial fat and are worried about hollow cheeks
- When you need a natural recovery rather than an artificial pulling effect
- Summary of when Thermage works properly
- When your cheek feels like “this” when you pinch it with your hand
When you look in the mirror and pinch your cheek with your hand,
there are times when the skin feels soft and slack rather than thick and firm.
That is the optimal timing for Thermage. (Like in the photo below.)

Hongdae Thermage applies heat to the dermis layer beneath the skin,
which tightens and regenerates loosened collagen tissue.
To put it simply, think of it like refilling a deflated, wrinkled balloon with air so that the surface becomes smooth and taut again.
This is what it feels like when loose skin is tightened.
However, there is one thing you must check here.
Sagging skin is not always just a problem of the skin surface.
If the muscles inside the face have lost strength and sag downward, it can also feel like the skin has lost elasticity.
In that case, Thermage, which only tightens the outer skin, may not be enough.
It could be that the supporting muscles have weakened, causing the mid-cheek to flatten and the nasolabial folds to deepen.

In such cases, some people may need to lift the facial muscles beneath the skin with a device like Emface
to help restore volume in the midface.
There are also skin conditions where combining treatments is necessary to maximize results.
If you are curious about Emface, please refer to the post below.
It would be nice to do everything, but budgets are limited,
and you also have to consider your skin condition, downtime, and various other factors, right?
It’s best to get the treatment at a place that can accurately diagnose what you need most
and recommend what will be most effective.

- When you don’t have much facial fat and are worried about hollow cheeks
There are also quite a few people who come to see me because they developed hollow cheeks after getting a lifting laser done incorrectly.
Ultrasound lifting treatments like Ulthera and Shurink, which can have a fat-reducing effect,
require caution for people with little facial fat.
However, Thermage mainly targets the dermis layer higher up rather than the deep fat layer,
so it is relatively safe in terms of hollow cheeks.

That said, Thermage alone cannot restore lost volume.
That’s because Thermage is a treatment that tightens the skin, not one that fills sunken areas.
If you came to Hongdae for Thermage but have very little facial fat and look tired,
rather than getting 1,200 shots of Thermage alone,
it is much more effective to fill sunken volume areas with collagen boosters such as Juvelook Volume or Sculptra,
and then get 300 to 600 shots of Thermage focused on the areas of concern.

I think treatments should always be done in the most cost-effective way, in combination with other treatmentsㅎㅎ
In addition, I explained in great detail how to get Thermage properly in my previous post,
so please be sure to read the article below before getting it.
- When you need a natural recovery rather than an artificial pulling effect
This depends on the patient’s personal preference.
If you want a dramatic change in face shape like surgery, or an artificially pulled feeling,
you may not be satisfied with Hongdae Thermage.
Thermage is more like turning back time to how your skin looked in its good days.
As the weeks pass, more and more collagen gradually builds after the treatment,
fine lines fade, skin texture becomes smoother, and the effect is felt slowly over time—that’s what makes it appealing.
So it is especially recommended for people who want a natural change without an artificial look.

However, there are also people trying a treatment for the first time who may find the price a bit burdensome.
For these people, it can be a good idea to start with a device that offers similar results but is much more cost-effective.
(I usually recommend Potenza Diamond, Coreji Egg, MPR Toroidal, SERF, and similar options depending on the situation.)

This is difficult unless the clinic has a wide variety of equipment, so it’s worth checking that as well.
There are also other tips for choosing a clinic, which I summarized in the post below.
Summary of when Thermage works properly
Here is today’s summary.
- Soft, sagging skin: Thermage is effective, but if muscle sagging is severe, consider Emface
- When facial fat is low: improve elasticity with Hongdae Thermage, and restore volume with Juvelook/Sculptra
- When seeking a natural result: suitable when you want subtle, gradual, refined skin texture without looking obvious

Just because something is famous or expensive does not mean it will work the same way on my face.
It is important to have the treatment done at a place that can comprehensively analyze skin thickness, the amount of fat, and the degree of muscle movement and hollowing,
and choose the procedure that is most needed for your face right now.
Thank you. This was Jo Wonjin.
