Hello, I’m Dr. Jo Won-jin, and I’ve been seeing patients for 10 years.

I’ve heard Serf hurts less than Ulthera or Thermage,
but what if it’s weak and doesn’t work?
You’ve probably heard of Ulthera and Thermage, but Serf is a device that has become popular relatively recently, right?
That’s why many clinics are only just beginning to introduce the device.
For devices that have been released not long ago, how much know-how has been accumulated at the clinic is extremely important.
Today, based on my experience as one of the first to introduce Serf in Mapo-gu,
I’ll talk about ways to improve Serf results in Hongdae.
You’ll be able to maximize the effect while protecting your valuable budget.

Hongdae Serf
- Combining modes and shots according to the area of concern
Serf is not a procedure that simply rubs over the entire face.
That’s because our skin has different thicknesses in different areas, and the causes of concerns are also different.
Let’s take the nasolabial folds in the photo below as an example.

Those wrinkles are not simply the skin surface folding; they occur when the upper cheek fat loses elasticity and sags.
At this point, a strategic combination of two modes is needed.
First, the Deep mode targets the deep fat layer in the sagging cheek area to contract the loosened tissue and improve support.
There are a total of three modes, and the Middle mode is the Thermage mode.
Then, the Middle mode stimulates the dermis to improve fine wrinkles on the surface of the nasolabial folds and improve elasticity.
When stimulated in this way, collagen in the subdermal layer regenerates, resulting in overall firmer skin.
Only when this kind of dual targeting is achieved can you feel a real change in the smoothing of the nasolabial folds.

Important note: the trap of effective shot counts
Serf, like Thermage, is a type of radiofrequency treatment,
and collagen production is activated only when the skin temperature reaches a certain level.
The problem is that the early shots are used up in the preheating stage to raise the skin temperature.
Serf tip types
For example, if 300 shots are performed, the actual effective shots excluding the energy used for preheating may be around 200 shots.
So rather than simply focusing on the number of shots, the key is how to determine the minimum number of effective shots that can produce real results for your skin condition,
and how to design the distribution of those effective shots by area within a set budget. That level of detail determines whether the procedure succeeds or fails.

2. Determining properly whether Serf can solve your concern
Just because Hongdae Serf combines the advantages of Ulthera and Thermage does not mean it is a universal solution for every skin concern.
In fact, Serf’s mechanism is somewhat closer to Thermage (improving surface elasticity and skin texture).
If your expectations and your skin’s underlying condition do not match Serf well,
even if you receive it many times, satisfaction will inevitably be lower than with other procedures.

ex. When fat sagging is severe and you want an Ulthera-level effect
Serf can help refine the facial line,
but it does not destroy fat cells themselves or dramatically reduce volume.
If you have a lot of fat and severe sagging along the jawline and want a definite lifting effect,
rather than simply increasing the number of shots, it may be far more economical and efficient to consider a procedure that reduces fat (such as V-OLET) or
a combined treatment with Ulthera.
Ulthera is explained in more detail in the post below.
ex. When the skin is too dry and lacks nourishment
Serf works through the process of the skin regenerating itself after thermal stimulation.
But what if the skin itself is dry and rough, like a drought-stricken field?
It would be difficult for the skin to respond to the energy because the supply of nutrients needed for regeneration would not be smooth.
For these people, combining the procedure with skin boosters such as Rejuran, Juvelook, or Rituo to strengthen the skin tissue itself
is like fertilizing a field, and this needs to be done together to see proper results.

It would be great if consultations were also honest and realistic.
That way, from the patient’s perspective too, you wouldn’t waste money.
I’ve written in detail below about how to choose a good dermatology clinic, so please make sure to read it.

3. Summary of ways to improve Serf results
The thing to be most careful about is an approach like, “Everyone says it’s good,” or “Just do more shots no matter what.”
For satisfying results, be sure to check the following three things.
-
Custom design: How are the Deep/Middle/షallow modes allocated according to my area of concern?
-
Effective shot optimization: Are the actual effective shots calculated while considering the preheating stage?
-
Combined synergy: Are there complementary measures, such as skin boosters, that take my skin’s underlying condition into account?

In the end, rather than a place that “does everything you ask,”
it’s better to check whether they present a realistic plan so that results can be achieved cost-effectively within a set budget.
And that can only be done properly when there is plenty of procedural experience.
What matters is not which device you get, but how strategically you get it.
I hope you’ll keep today’s points in mind so that your valuable money and the effort you put into the procedure are not wasted.
Thank you. This has been Dr. Jo Won-jin.
