Hello. I’m Wonjin Cho, the director of Chai Clinic, where I have been practicing dermatology in Hongdae for 10 years.

I’ve had five sessions, but I’m not seeing any results.
I heard Pico Toning was good, so I tried it,
but I still can’t really tell the difference even when comparing photos.
My melasma has actually gotten darker.
These are the kinds of reviews you will inevitably see when searching for Pico Toning in Hongdae.
Why does this happen?
Simply receiving Pico Toning does not automatically improve pigmentation problems.
The reason results can differ even with the same equipment and the same practitioner is that
there are other variables that matter more than the procedure itself.

Today, for those considering Pico Toning in Hongdae,
I’ll summarize the five checkpoints that influence the results of Hongdae Pico Toning.
Simply reviewing these points once before deciding on treatment can significantly reduce wasted time and money.
Even if you have already had treatment elsewhere and were disappointed with the results,
you can check where things may have gone wrong.
- The number and interval of sessions are insufficient
Pico Toning is not a treatment where dramatic changes can usually be expected after just one or two sessions.
This is because the pigment needs to be broken down and naturally eliminated through the skin’s regeneration cycle.
Considering that our skin’s turnover cycle is approximately 28 days,
it takes at least a month for a single treatment to lead to visible results.
In general, at least five sessions at intervals of 2–4 weeks are recommended.
For deeper melasma or darker pigmentation, eight to ten or more sessions may be recommended.
This is why there are so many reviews saying, “I had three sessions, but there was no improvement.”
Visible changes require cumulative sessions, so it can be difficult to notice an improvement if you stop midway.
On the other hand, having treatments too frequently can also burden the skin,
so it is important to set intervals according to your skin’s recovery rate.

- You are not protecting your skin from UV rays
Even if Pico Toning breaks down pigmentation, continued unprotected exposure to UV rays can keep producing new pigment.
It is like pouring water into a bottomless jar.
Melasma in particular is a pigmentation condition that reacts sensitively to UV rays,
so without proper care, it may become darker rather than improve.
After treatment, apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and PA+++ or higher every day, reapplying it every 2–3 hours.
This also applies on cloudy days and indoors.
UVA entering through windows can also stimulate pigment production.
If you spend a lot of time outdoors, we also recommend using a hat or parasol.
Without adequate UV protection, the effects of Pico Toning may be reduced by half or more.

- You did not consider the choice of equipment
Not every treatment called “Pico Toning” is the same.
The equipment used varies by clinic, and the wavelength and pulse width also differ between devices.
Even at the same price, the results may vary depending on which device is used.
Representative pico devices include PicoSure and PicoWay.
We use the PicoSure device,
which is known to have a high absorption rate for melanin pigment at its 755 nm Alexandrite wavelength.
The principle is to break pigment into small particles using a short pulse width, helping the body eliminate it naturally.
Treatments using Focus Lens technology are also possible, making the device useful for removing dark tattoos as well.
I also chose PicoSure because it has shown stable results in caring for melasma, blemishes, and hyperpigmentation.
When looking into Pico Toning in Hongdae, I recommend asking, “What equipment do you use?”

- The treatment intensity does not suit your skin
Pico Toning is not a treatment where stronger is always better.
The appropriate energy level varies depending on your skin condition, the depth of the pigmentation, skin thickness, and your condition on the day of treatment.
If the energy is too low, the changes may be minimal; if it is too high, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) may develop,
which can make your skin tone look duller instead.
Korean skin, in particular, tends to be relatively sensitive to pigmentation,
so excessive treatment intensity can sometimes produce the opposite result.
That is why it is important to choose a clinic where a doctor personally examines your skin before treatment
and adjusts the intensity at each session.

When receiving Pico Toning in Hongdae,
be sure to check whether “the doctor personally examines you and adjusts the intensity at every session”
and whether “the treatment plan is adjusted flexibly according to your skin condition.”
Better results can come from a clinic that designs treatment for each individual’s skin
rather than one that follows only a standardized manual.
Energy adjustment is extremely important for both pigmentation treatment and hair removal.
If you read the article below, it may help reduce the risk of losing out while receiving treatment.
- You are neglecting post-treatment home care
Immediately after Pico Toning, the skin becomes temporarily sensitive.
Without appropriate moisturizing, soothing care, and UV protection, the results may be reduced and the risk of irritation may increase.
These are the home-care steps you should be sure to follow.
-
Avoid saunas, jjimjilbangs, strenuous exercise, and alcohol on the day of treatment
-
Avoid using irritating ingredients such as alcohol, AHA, BHA, and high-concentration vitamin C for 1–2 days
-
Moisturize sufficiently (hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and ceramide-based products are recommended)
-
Always wear a hat and apply sunscreen when going outdoors
-
Do not touch or rub the treated area forcefully

The 23 hours and 30 minutes of care at home have a greater influence on the results than the 30 minutes spent receiving treatment at the clinic.
Even after paying for an expensive treatment, neglecting home care can lead to only average results.
It is best to think of treatment and home care as one package.
And if you want to choose the right clinic for Pico Toning,
be sure to read the article below before making your decision.
It may help reduce the likelihood of an unsuccessful outcome.
Hongdae Pico Toning: In the End, Receiving It Properly Is Key
Pico Toning is not receiving mixed reviews because it is an ineffective treatment.
It is difficult to notice changes if even one of these five factors—sessions, UV protection, equipment, intensity, and home care—is missing.
Conversely, if all five are properly managed, you can experience sufficiently satisfying changes.

Ultimately, the quickest approach is to receive an accurate diagnosis and begin with a plan suited to your own skin.
Thank you. This was Wonjin Cho.
