Hello, I’m Lee Seong-jun, chief director of the Seoul branch of Reading Plastic Surgery.
If people often ask whether you are sleepy or in a bad mood regardless of your condition or how you feel, you may want to suspect drooping eyelids.
As time passes, our skin loses elasticity, which leads to sagging.
However, most people share the desire to stay youthful regardless of age.
That is why many people are visiting us to resolve their questions about ptosis and drooping eyelids before it is too late.

What is ptosis?
Ptosis, or drooping eyelids, usually appears due to aging unless it is caused by trauma or is congenital.
As the strength of the muscle that connects to and supports the upper eyelid gradually weakens, the upper eyelid sags downward, making the eyes look smaller and sleepier.
People with ptosis tend to use their forehead muscles to open their eyes, and over time this can cause wrinkles on the forehead.
So if your field of vision suddenly seems narrower, you may want to suspect ptosis caused by drooping upper eyelids.

What are the types of drooping eyelid ptosis?
Drooping eyelid lifting can be broadly classified into three types.
The first is upper blepharoplasty, which is a surgery that makes an incision in the upper eyelid. The second is brow lift surgery, which involves making an incision below the eyebrow.
In both cases, after removing sagging skin, unnecessary fat, and the orbicularis oculi muscle, the skin and levator palpebrae superioris muscle are sutured, allowing for a more defined eye shape.
The third is forehead lifting.
This refers to surgery that helps improve drooping eyelids and reduce forehead wrinkles by pulling up the forehead skin.
Which drooping eyelid ptosis lifting is right for me?
Because there are many types of drooping eyelid lifting, some people may be unsure which one to choose.
First, upper blepharoplasty is suitable for people who are not very concerned about the forehead and are unhappy with their existing double eyelid line, or who want to create a new double eyelid line.
A brow lift is the right option for people who already had a double eyelid line they liked, but the line has become hidden as the eyes sagged and they want to restore their eyes to how they looked before.
Forehead lifting is suitable for cases where forehead skin sagging or wrinkles are severe, where drooping forehead skin has also caused drooping eyelids, and where repeated upper blepharoplasty has made the space between the eyes and eyebrows narrow.

Forehead lifting vs. drooping eyelid ptosis lifting
In other words, if you want drooping eyelid lifting without issues in the forehead, upper blepharoplasty or brow lift surgery is appropriate. If you want to improve the forehead as well, forehead lifting is suitable.
Depending on the situation, both procedures may need to be performed at the same time.
If you have ptosis along with severe sagging and wrinkles in the forehead skin, combining the two methods can address both functional and aesthetic concerns.
Because the necessary procedure can differ depending on each person’s facial structure, the degree of sagging, and the affected area, a careful preoperative consultation and evaluation are necessary.
