Hello,
I’m Dr. Lee Seong-jun, Director of Seoul branch of Reting Plastic Surgery.
As we get older,
one of the first areas where we notice changes is the eyes.
If your eyes look smaller than before,
or people often tell you that you look tired,
drooping eyelids may be the cause.
Generally, when the eyelids sag and
cause functional discomfort by blocking vision,
or when the eyes change to look more tired and heavy,
this condition is called “ptosis.”

When people hear the term ptosis,
they often think only of double eyelid surgery.
However, it is important to accurately identify
the cause of the drooping eyelids,
and to understand that the appropriate improvement method differs accordingly.

This is because the surgical method differs depending on whether the cause of the eyelid problem is
“muscle”
or
“skin and fat.”
It is necessary to understand each cause accurately
and approach surgery in a way that matches it.
Upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, brow lift
Which surgery do I need for my eyes?

The terms related to eyelid surgery at Cheongdam Plastic Surgery can be unfamiliar and confusing.
Upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, brow lift,
are all different procedures,
and their causes and surgical directions are also different.
As we age,
the levator muscle, which lifts the eyelid,
becomes weaker,
so even when we intentionally open our eyes,
the upper eyelids do not rise properly.
In this state,
surgery is needed to improve both aesthetics and functional issues, including:
✔️ droopy eye appearance and visual field 확보,
✔️ strengthened eye-opening force and improvement of dark circles,
✔️ improved tear troughs, and
✔️ other related concerns.

☝🏻First, in the case of upper blepharoplasty,
it is a procedure often sought at Cheongdam Plastic Surgery by people whose upper eyelid skin has sagged and stretched,
or whose eye shape has changed due to weakened muscle function.

The upper blepharoplasty procedure is performed as follows.
-
Design the incision line according to the degree of sagging and the shape of the eyes
-
Remove excess skin and fat, and fix the orbicularis oculi muscle
-
Meticulously suture the incised skin and upper eyelid muscle
-
Complete a clear and defined eye shape
In this way, upper blepharoplasty is a surgery that improves the orbicularis oculi muscle, which is the fundamental cause of drooping eyelids.
The orbicularis oculi muscle is the muscle that closes the eyelids, and when its elasticity decreases,
the skin sags and creates the underlying cause of eyelid drooping.

Cheongdam Plastic Surgery does not simply make an incision on a drooping eyelid.
It establishes a solution while considering the connection between the anatomical structures around the eyes,
so that the result looks harmonious.
For example, if the upper eyelid has sagged and upper blepharoplasty is chosen,
the impression may become stronger after surgery,
or the eyes may appear heavy.
For this reason,
changes in brow position are also considered together,
and combined surgery with a brow lift is often planned.

Raising the eyebrows can ultimately create a natural effect
that brings back the eye shape you had when you were younger.

A brow lift
is a procedure that cuts and pulls up the sagging skin near the eyebrows,
improves the visual field by lifting drooping eyelids,
strengthens eye-opening force,
and can improve the issue of eyelashes poking the eyes.
Usually, if you liked your double eyelids when you were younger,
but they have become buried as the eyelids sag with age,
you may feel even more dramatic satisfaction.
Lastly, I will explain lower blepharoplasty, which is the most easily confused with upper blepharoplasty.
It is a surgery that brightens and revitalizes tired-looking under-eyes,
and helps improve dark circles, tear troughs,
and uneven or bulging under-eye fat.

Lower blepharoplasty is similar to upper blepharoplasty in that,
according to the degree of sagging,
the lower eyelid line is incised and the excess skin and fat, as well as the orbicularis muscle, are removed.

At this time, if the under-eye area protrudes or appears uneven due to under-eye fat,
under-eye fat repositioning is performed together.
A small incision is made on the inner conjunctiva of the eye,
some of the fat is removed and repositioned,
which helps improve a clearer eye appearance.
I’m wondering which surgery to have!

At Cheongdam Plastic Surgery,
we do not look at the eyes in isolation.
We examine the movement of the eyebrows, forehead, and the muscles of the entire face,
and then determine the surgical method to match that harmony.
Just because the eyelids sag,
does not mean it is always ptosis.
Among people who feel that their eyes are heavy and uncomfortable,
there are many cases where there is no problem with the muscles at all,
and the skin has simply stretched.

Conversely, in some cases, the double eyelids seem to disappear because the brow has descended and causes the eyelid to be covered.
Therefore, the surgical method must always change according to the cause.
How is the cost of ptosis surgery determined?

Surgery to improve drooping eyelids is divided into various methods depending on the cause,
and the cost can also vary accordingly.
In general, these include
upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty,
brow lift, and under-eye fat repositioning,
and the cost may differ depending on the individual’s eye condition, the scope of surgery,
and the surgical method used at Cheongdam Plastic Surgery.
The exact cost is determined after consultation,
and because there are large individual differences,
a consultation process is necessary.
To return to the eyes you had when you were younger

If drooping eyelids are a concern,
it is a good idea to approach the issue not only as a matter of recreating a double eyelid,
but also from the perspective of returning to the eyes you had when you were younger.

Thank you for reading this long post.
I hope you become more naturally youthful tomorrow than today,
and even more so than yesterday.
This was Dr. Lee Seong-jun of Seoul Reting Plastic Surgery.
This post is content intended to provide general information about
drooping eyelids,
under-eye fat repositioning, and
ptosis surgery costs.
Whether surgery is actually appropriate should be determined according to each person’s health condition and purpose,
and should be decided through consultation with a specialist medical professional.
