Hand and arm vascular dilation
At our clinic, in addition to lower extremity varicose veins, we also perform cosmetic surgery for veins that have become unsightly and dilated on the back of the hand and the arm.
No matter how beautiful the hand is, if the veins are bulging and make the hand or arm look unattractive, it can be embarrassing to show them to others.
In such cases, sclerotherapy, which can eliminate the veins without any side effects, solves the concern of protruding unsightly veins. ^^

Frequently asked questions and answers about vascular dilation on the back of the hand and arm
- The veins on the back of my hand and arm are too large. Is this a disease too?
Unlike lower extremity varicose veins, venous dilatation in the back of the hand and arm is mostly caused by constitutional factors.
This is because there is too little subcutaneous fat, so the veins appear visible through the skin.
Obese people have veins that are not easily seen, but in thin people the veins appear protruded.
- The veins on the back of my hand and arm are very unsightly. What should I do?
If the diameter is not very large, sclerotherapy can restore a nice-looking hand.
If the diameter is too large and treatment is not possible, surgery is performed to remove the unsightly veins.
Even after surgery, the scars are hardly visible.
- How is sclerotherapy performed?
It can be performed simply by injecting a sclerosant into your vein through a syringe, in the same way as a regular intravenous injection.
It takes effect immediately after the procedure, and the unsightly veins shrink and disappear right after the injection.
However, it takes about one month for them to become completely occluded and disappear.
Depending on the number of veins treated, one to two sessions are usually enough to eliminate the unsightly veins on the back of the hand and the arm.
- Is sclerotherapy painful, or are there side effects from the medication?
Sclerotherapy is a procedure that is not painful at all during treatment.
Even when the medication is administered into the vein, no vein pain occurs, so there is no need to worry about pain.
Also, the sclerosant is an FDA-approved product in the United States and is a safe injectable that has not been reported to cause side effects.
The procedure is a simple one, about the same as receiving a regular intravenous injection.
- If the veins in the hand and arm are removed, will there be problems with blood circulation?
There will be no problems with blood circulation.
Even if the superficial veins under the skin are removed, the deep veins fully take over their role, so circulation problems will never occur.
This is because the superficial veins play only a very minor role in blood circulation.
Since there has not been a single case of circulation-related side effects in many procedures, you can undergo the treatment with confidence.
- How many sessions of sclerotherapy are needed?
As a principle, each vein is treated one at a time.
If too many veins are treated at once, there can be a problem in which untreated small veins enlarge compensatorily.
The number of treatment sessions varies by person and depends on how many veins are treated, but the principle is to perform one session per vein.
- Do hand and arm procedures require compression garments like leg varicose vein treatment does?
No.
There is no need to wear compression garments for hand and arm procedures.
You can return to daily life right away without any bandage or adhesive bandage.
- What is the recovery process after the procedure?
After the injection treatment (sclerotherapy), you can go home right away, and afterward, you only need to occasionally massage the treated area with the hand cream provided by the hospital.
This is to help prevent the formation of thrombi inside the veins.
If a thrombus occasionally forms and does not go away, you can return to the clinic after 1 to 2 weeks so that the thrombus can be removed.
The thrombus is removed by puncturing it with a fine needle and squeezing it out to improve the condition.
The number of times the thrombus is squeezed out varies from person to person, but it is usually 1 to 2 times.
If it is difficult to visit the clinic, it is simple enough to do it yourself at home.
- When can daily life resume after hand and arm sclerotherapy?
Daily life can resume immediately, and there are no problems with everyday activities.
After the procedure, it is even more effective to occasionally apply the hand cream provided by the hospital and massage the area so that thrombi do not form in the veins.
There is little disruption to daily life, and work can be resumed immediately after the procedure.
Mild pain may occur as a thrombus forms, but this is a normal process, and the pain goes away with massage.
- Are there any side effects from hand and arm sclerotherapy?
There are almost no side effects.
The only issue is that a thrombus may form inside the veins at the treated site, causing bruising along the vein or mild pain, but this can be resolved with massage and is part of the normal recovery process.
If the thrombus cannot be resolved by massage, you will visit the clinic, undergo a procedure in which it is punctured with a fine needle and squeezed out, and then be observed.

Sclerotherapy is performed for vessels with a diameter of 5 mm or less.
It involves drawing a sclerosant into a syringe and injecting it into the diseased vein.
The procedure is simple because it is done in the same way as a regular intravenous injection.
The downside is that if the treatment area is large, the procedure must be performed over several sessions, and it can be inconvenient because it takes about 1 to 2 months for the veins to disappear completely after treatment.
For thin veins, there is no treatment method that can replace sclerotherapy, so it is the best treatment for veins with a small diameter.
There are also methods using pigment lasers, but they are less effective and only work on red vessels with a diameter of 0.1 to 0.2 mm, and they require multiple sessions, which is inconvenient.
Understanding sclerotherapy for vascular dilation
![[Duhan Plastic Surgery Clinic Varicose Veins] - [Hand and Arm Venous Dilation] image 5](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/f98b721498/naver_blog/gimlet1124/assets/by_hash/1e5543182857febc80a97c3d81ad9fff22886d1b106e0448610068687b67e102.jpg)
Blood vessels are made up of three layers.
Among them, the innermost layer, the endothelial layer, is stripped away and removed by the sclerosant.
A vessel that has lost its endothelial cells is left with only the middle and outer layers, and as thrombi adhere to the middle layer, the vessel gradually sticks together, becomes occluded, and disappears.
The period until disappearance varies from person to person, but the average is about one month.

Recovery process and care instructions after the procedure
○ After the procedure, massage the area with the hand cream provided by the hospital.
○ Mild pain may occur at the site where the thrombus has formed.
○ Visit the hospital at 1- to 2-week intervals to remove thrombi from the treated area.
○ Daily life is possible immediately.
○ If you want additional treatment for other veins, wait at least one to two months between sessions.
Important notes about the procedure
● Varicose vein procedures must be performed after an accurate diagnosis.
● The choice of procedure depends on the cause and the condition of the veins.
● A good procedure is one that has no side effects and delivers clear results.
● A method that minimizes swelling and pain after the procedure should be selected.
● For varicose veins, scarless surgery and sclerotherapy are the most preferred methods.
If veins are visible under the skin or protruding, unsightly veins can be easily treated.
Even if you have a beautiful face, visible veins can become a source of concern.
Even if you have beautifully shaped legs, if the veins are visible, you may not be able to wear a skirt.
It is not possible to go around wearing gloves just because thick veins protrude on a pretty back of the hand.
