The symptom is that the blood vessels expand abnormally and become visible through the skin.

If the condition is severe, the vessels may bulge out in a twisted shape, causing cosmetic concerns.

In some cases, blue blood vessels expand and appear to spread like a spider web, and tiny red capillaries may also appear like a spider web.

Treatment methods for varicose veins

There are two major methods: surgical treatment and sclerotherapy.

Surgical treatment has developed in many ways over the centuries, and treatment has often involved removing the causative vein from the body.

Currently, even in advanced European countries, surgical methods such as vein stripping and ambulatory phlebectomy are widely used, with sclerotherapy also used as an adjunct.

Sclerotherapy is a method of treatment without surgery by injecting a sclerosant into the blood vessel. It has the advantages of not requiring anesthesia and causing no scars at all.

In other words, it is a method of injecting the sclerosant into the vessel using a syringe, similar to a standard blood vessel injection.

Other treatments include transilluminated powered phlebectomy (Ttrivex), endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), and dye laser treatment for capillaries, but there are concerns about various side effects, and in many cases the treatment effect is inferior to surgery or sclerotherapy. Because the vessels that can actually be used are limited, phlebologists in advanced European countries caution against the use of these treatments.

Types of varicose vein treatment methods

1. High ligation of the saphenous vein

This method blocks the area of reflux in the valve of the saphenous vein. Unlike saphenous vein stripping or ambulatory phlebectomy, which completely removes the diseased, enlarged vein, this method preserves the vessel and blocks only the refluxing segment.

In other words, it is similar to carrying out repair work to block a hole in a dam.

It is a surgical method used to block reflux in the early stages when the blood vessels have not expanded severely.

The key to the surgery is that all reflux in the vessel branches must be blocked to prevent recurrence.

These vessel branches cannot be treated with laser-based methods.

2. Saphenous vein stripping

This is a method of stripping and removing the vessel at the starting point of the refluxing superficial vein.

It is a fundamental method of blocking reflux by performing high ligation and simultaneously removing the vessel when there is severe blood reflux and excessive dilation.

It is applied when blood reflux exists and vascular dilation is severe.

3. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy

This is a procedure that can replace high ligation when blood reflux is present and high ligation would otherwise be needed.

It is a method of blocking reflux with medication by injecting a sclerosant into the area where the reflux begins.

It is performed when there is fear of surgery or when scarring is not desired.

However, it has the disadvantage of being less effective than surgery and having more frequent recurrence.

4. Compression sclerotherapy

This is applied when treating vessels with a diameter of 4 mm or less.

When the vessels are too thin and small and spread widely, they are difficult to treat, so sclerotherapy is used as the main procedure.

After sclerotherapy, compression stockings are worn to reduce the formation of blood clots and promote faster recovery; this is called compression sclerotherapy.

5. Simple sclerotherapy

In cases of localized red capillaries or blue reticular veins, a sclerosing agent is injected for treatment.

When the area is small, compression stockings are not particularly necessary, so treatment is performed with sclerotherapy alone.
