What is a depressed scar?
It refers to a crater-like sunken scar that occurs after having chickenpox or chronic acne.

What is DHL treatment for correcting depressed scars?
In the past, correction of depressed scars was performed using machine abrasion, laser resurfacing, or chemical peeling, and sometimes a CoolTouch laser was used to make scars shallower or less noticeable.
These methods are suitable for scars about 1 to 2 mm in size, but for large depressed scars over 5 mm, the results are less than expected.
DHL treatment performed at our clinic is a method of correcting depressed scars more effectively by simultaneously performing three procedures: Subcutaneous Dissection, Hyaluronic acid, and Laser.
Hyaluronic acid used in DHL for correcting depressed scars
Hyaluronic acid is an intercellular substance found between the dermis and epidermis of the skin. It is a biological substance that helps cells adhere to one another and acts as a lubricant between cells.
The hyaluronic acid used here is non-animal hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is the most widely used filler material, and because it is a biological substance, it is a safe filler with very little chance of side effects or inflammation.
It is used not only for correcting depressed scars, but also for correcting fine wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes, between the eyebrows, and around the mouth.
The effects of DHL treatment for depressed scars
No scar, once formed, is completely removable.
That is why it is called scar correction, and the term scar removal does not medically exist.
Even with DHL treatment, the depressed area becomes shallower and is improved to some extent, but it cannot be removed completely.
The correct understanding of DHL treatment is that it makes deep, dark scars into shallower, less noticeable scars.
Depressed scars suitable for DHL treatment
DHL treatment can be applied to depressed scars among depressed scars that are about 3 to 8 mm in size.
In the case of scars that are too small, subcutaneous dissection may not work well, so the treatment effect may be lower than for larger scars, or the procedure may not be possible.
For very small depressed scars, chemical peeling or laser resurfacing may be better.
For large depressed scars over 8 mm, fat grafting may be more effective than DHL treatment for correction.
DHL treatment method for correcting depressed scars
① The skin is disinfected, and the area with the depressed scar is marked with a design pen.

② Local anesthesia is administered at the site of the depressed scar.

③ After anesthesia, subcutaneous dissection is performed to create a space under the skin.

④ Hyaluronic acid (Juvederm) is injected into the dissected space under the skin.
Juvederm pushes up the skin in the depressed area, making the scar shallower.

⑤ A carbon dioxide laser is used to resurface the edges and corners of the depressed scar.

⑥ After the procedure, ointment is applied, and you can go home immediately after applying makeup.

Examples of DHL treatment for depressed scars
With DHC treatment, the depressed area becomes shallower and is improved to some extent.
The goal of the procedure is to correct deep, dark scars into a shallower, less noticeable state.

Advantages of DHL treatment
♥ The procedure is simple, and swelling and bruising occur only to a limited extent.
♥ The cost is low.
♥ You can return to daily life immediately after the procedure.
♥ The procedure is highly effective.
♥ The effect can last permanently.
Disadvantages of DHL treatment
▷ It is not suitable for depressed scars across the entire face, such as smallpox scars.
▷ It cannot be applied, or is less effective, for very small depressed scars (less than 2 mm in diameter).
▷ It is difficult to apply to darkly pigmented scars or white depigmented scars.
Number of DHL treatments
Usually, 1 to 2 sessions are enough to achieve satisfactory results.
If additional treatment is needed, the procedure is performed at intervals of about 3 months.
For large scars, there are occasional cases in which the procedure is performed up to 3 times.
Recovery process after DHL treatment
Bruising occurs after the procedure, but it usually fades after about 2 weeks.
Swelling also occurs, and the treated area may be slightly raised compared with the surrounding tissue before it settles down.
Because the bruising is limited to a small area, it is not very noticeable, and since it can be covered with concealer or makeup, there is no major problem with social activities.
Duration of the effects of DHL treatment
It takes about 3 months for the treated area to settle completely, and after that, there is almost no change.
After 3 months, the need for a second procedure is determined; if the result is satisfactory, treatment ends with one session.
If the result is insufficient, the procedure is repeated.
After the result is established, no further changes occur, so the effect is permanent.
Side effects of DHL treatment
♠ Inflammation may occur, but this is rare. If inflammation develops, the injected filler is removed.
♠ Overinjection may cause the area to protrude more than the surrounding tissue. In such cases, a small amount of filler can be removed, or hyaluronidase, which dissolves filler, can be injected to dissolve it and reduce the swelling.

Subcutaneous dissection, hyaluronic acid injection,
and laser resurfacing of the edges
help effectively raise depressed areas.
Because the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, pain is minimal.
Scar correction surgery does not completely erase scars.
It changes existing scars to make them less noticeable and more aesthetically pleasing.
