Ptosis refers to a condition in which the muscles used to open the eyes have weakened,
making it impossible to open the eyelids sufficiently.
It refers to cases where the eyes are obscured by sagging eyelid skin,
so the original size of the eyes does not fully show.
When the upper eyelid droops significantly,
it becomes difficult to open the eyes normally, and the black part of the eye is covered by more than half of the eyelid.
In order to open eyes that do not open well, people use the forehead and eyebrows
to force the eyes open, and one problem that can result is deep forehead wrinkles.
Diagnosis of Ptosis
Cases diagnosed with ptosis are usually as follows.
When the muscles that open the eyes are too weak to open the eyes properly, exposing only a small portion of the black part of the eye,
when the forehead and outer eyebrows press down on the eyes too much, making it difficult to open the eyes through the normal process,
when the eyebrows are raised to open the eyes, causing severe forehead wrinkles,
or when the eyelids droop or the eyes are smaller than average.
With ptosis, the drooping eyelids can make a person look tired and sleepy,
creating a lethargic impression, which becomes an issue in appearance.
However, the drooping eyelids can also cover the pupils and
cause visual obstruction, and the eyes can become easily puffy and watery, which is also a problem.
In addition, reduced vision and the fact that the corners of the eyes can become irritated,
which can lead to various diseases, are functional problems that cannot be overlooked.
If the habit of forcing the eyes open becomes more severe, forehead wrinkles also deepen.
Surgery to Improve Ptosis
Ptosis is generally divided into true ptosis and pseudoptosis.
In the case of true ptosis
Blepharoplasty alone does not make the eye shape appear clear,
and it is difficult to improve the related symptoms, so ptosis correction surgery or eye-opening correction is essential depending on the cause.
In the case of pseudoptosis
Blepharoplasty alone can create clear and distinct eyes.
Reasons for the Difference in Pseudoptosis Surgery Methods
Pseudoptosis also obstructs the field of vision,
so people use the forehead and eyebrows to open their eyes, which makes it easy to mistake it for ptosis.
However, because it is a skin issue, removing the sagging skin
and creating the double eyelid line can make the eyes look clear and distinct without eye-opening correction surgery.
That is why it can reduce the burden of surgery and recovery costs.
Therefore, a diagnosis by a specialist is very important.
In cases where the black part of the eye is exposed only slightly,
when it is difficult to open the eyes while pressing down on the forehead and outer eyebrows,
when the eyebrows are raised and forehead wrinkles form,
or when a person simply has small eyes or, compared with average eye size,
has been diagnosed with ptosis, many of those cases actually have pseudoptosis that can be sufficiently improved with blepharoplasty alone.
If a clinic unconditionally diagnoses ptosis and tries to steer patients toward eye-opening correction surgery, which costs more than standard double-eyelid surgery, it is best to be cautious.
