Nose plastic surgery has become very popular because it can dramatically transform a person’s appearance.
However, since it is performed on a body part located at the center of the face and in many cases involves the insertion of implants, side effects are also relatively common.
There are also many people suffering from side effects caused by inappropriate foreign materials used during nose procedures.
So, how should foreign materials in the nose be removed?
Can foreign materials inside the nose be safely removed?
The foreign materials inside the nose that cause serious problems come from implants that are not used in medical settings because of various issues.
In many cases, illegal procedures, often referred to as “informal” or “back-alley” procedures, used paraffin or liquid silicone that has remained in the body for decades.
There are also occasional cases of people receiving non-dissolving fillers in unauthorized foreign countries and then showing foreign body reactions.
In such cases, there may be no particular problem at first, or if a problem does occur, it progresses very slowly, so at the beginning of surgery people often do not realize that anything is wrong and many decades pass.
Cases that lead people to visit the hospital because of illegal implants can be broadly divided into two groups: those who want to change the shape because the nose has gradually become flatter and more coarse over time, and those who notice something is wrong with their nose because it has turned red or is accompanied by pain.
To solve the problem with surgery to remove foreign materials inside the nose
Many people whose nose has become flatter and more coarse due to foreign materials tend to think of surgery as something simple.
They come in thinking that the issue of raising the nose, as in a typical nose surgery, will be solved with a straightforward procedure.
However, if such cases are approached with a standard rhinoplasty method, there is a possibility of problems later on, so it is very difficult to treat them in the same way as ordinary implant-based nose surgery.
In such cases, after first removing the foreign material, a procedure to fill the removed space with the patient’s own tissue or a cartilage graft is recommended.
Ironically, however, most people who visit the clinic because they are dissatisfied with the shape feel that they have no real problem themselves, so they do not want the foreign material that is causing the problem removed and often ignore it until they notice something wrong with their nose, which makes treatment difficult.
People who visit the clinic because of problems caused by foreign materials often say they are worried because the area where the foreign material was inserted becomes red, hurts repeatedly, or the swelling increases and decreases every day while the shape of the nose changes little by little.
They cannot talk to others about their nose, and after visiting another hospital and trying to relieve symptoms with ordinary medication, they eventually decide to have surgery and come in because of persistent problems.
In such cases, surgery is performed to remove as much of the problematic foreign material as possible and convert the area to the patient’s own tissue.
Foreign materials inside the nose may not be removed in one operation?!
Rather than performing the surgery all at once, it is usually done in stages, about 2 to 3 times.
Because scar tissue and inflammation caused by the foreign material are clumped together in and around the area where the foreign material was inserted, if the problematic parts are removed during the first surgery, normal tissue would also have to be removed, so during the first operation the foreign material is removed while preserving as much of the surrounding scar tissue and inflamed tissue as possible, and then the surgery is performed once more.
The goal of foreign material removal surgery is to complete the procedure with as few problems as possible, so it is better to proceed in stages.
After the first surgery, injection therapy and medication to reduce scarring are performed together.
Usually, after the first surgery, the surrounding tissue is allowed time to settle, and the second surgery is considered after about one year.
When the second surgery is performed, reconstructive surgery using autologous tissue is done, and if the foreign material has not been sufficiently removed when considering the second surgery, foreign material removal may be performed once again.
For autologous tissue, dermal-fat grafting is usually recommended, and if necessary, septal cartilage, ear cartilage, or rib cartilage may be used to shape the nose.
When performing foreign material removal surgery and reconstructive surgery
A surgical plan is made with sufficient time.
It must be approached in a different direction from standard nose surgery or revision rhinoplasty.
Rather than being a procedure that simply removes the foreign material,
what is needed is to preserve the surrounding tissue as much as possible and help the nose regain its shape, so it is important to take a staged approach with enough time.
After the first surgery, abnormal symptoms usually improve and are greatly relieved, but in some cases the nose becomes lower and the shape looks worse.
However, since a future surgery to refine the shape will be planned, the patient needs to remain patient.
In the case of foreign material removal surgery, the waiting period is long and the surgeries continue to be highly difficult, so it is recommended to make a careful surgical plan and proceed after sufficient consultation with a specialist.
