What is epicanthoplasty?
Epicanthoplasty is a surgery that opens the front inner corner of the eye, that is, the part called the epicanthic fold, to extend the horizontal length of the eyes.
Because the epicanthic fold, which is common among East Asians, covers the inner corner of the eye,
it can make the eyes look horizontally short or give a cramped impression.
By naturally opening this area,
✔ the eyes can look longer
✔ and create a clearer, more refreshed impression.
It may be easiest to think of it as “a surgery that slightly opens the inner corner of the eye.”

If the epicanthic fold covers a lot and the eyes look short and the impression seems cramped,
if the space between the eyes is wide and you want to balance the facial features,
or if you want a clear double-eyelid line starting from the inner corner of the eyes,
we recommend positively considering epicanthoplasty.
A clearer, more refreshing eye shape can be achieved than with double-eyelid surgery alone.

Of course, not everyone needs epicanthoplasty.
If the eyes are already close together
▶ the impression may become too strong, or the balance of facial features may be disrupted and look even more cramped.
If the inner corner is already sufficiently exposed and there is almost no epicanthic fold
▶ creating only the double-eyelid line may be enough.
If there is significant exposure of the lacrimal caruncle
▶ performing epicanthoplasty excessively on eyes that already have significant lacrimal caruncle exposure can also cause functional problems such as dry eyes.

If you have a high nasal bridge or are planning nose surgery,
if epicanthoplasty is opened in advance,
as the nose is raised and the skin is pulled, the eyes may look closer together.
If you are planning nose surgery,
we recommend first having a thorough consultation with a specialist and planning the order of surgeries in advance!

Among those considering epicanthoplasty, many worry about scars.
Because the area around the eyes has well-developed blood vessels and is not a part of daily life that receives major irritation,
wounds tend to heal faster than in other areas, and there are not many cases where scars remain severe.
For about one to two months after surgery, during the recovery process, there may be some redness or a slightly bumpy feeling, but this is a natural process.
As time passes, it gradually stabilizes, and usually between 3 and 6 months, the color fades, the skin becomes smoother, and it settles naturally.
Although there are individual differences, in most cases noticeable traces are greatly reduced after 6 months, so you do not need to worry excessively just because of the initial changes.

Epicanthoplasty is not a surgery that automatically makes you look better just because you do it; the outcome can vary greatly depending on the facial proportions and eye structure.
Even with the same surgery, the appropriate direction differs depending on the degree of the epicanthic fold, the distance between the eyes,
and the overall impression, so a personalized approach is important.
Rather than deciding based only on reviews or trends,
we recommend getting an accurate diagnosis of your current eye condition and making the decision about whether surgery is right for you and which method to choose through sufficient consultation.
