“Doctor, which brand of implant
lasts the longest?”

Hello.
I am Lee Jong-woo,
Chief Director of Gwanghwamun The Square Dental Clinic.
These days, through advertisements or things you hear from people around you,
you may have heard many comments like
“This brand is good,”
“An expensive implant is the best,” and so on.
However, speaking from clinical experience,
there is no implant brand that is perfectly suitable for everyone.
Today, I will point out a few common misunderstandings patients often have
and explain what is actually more important
for implant success.

Common Misunderstanding 1
“Will an expensive brand last a lifetime?”
Many people think that if they use a good brand,
they can use it for a long time without fail,
but that is not true.
Implants, like cars,
do not have their performance determined by “brand” alone.
Even with products from the same brand,
results can vary greatly depending on the patient’s bone condition,
gum condition, and lifestyle habits.
If there is enough bone and the gums are healthy,
any implant is likely to be usable for a long time,
but on the other hand, if bone and gums are insufficient,
problems can occur no matter how good the brand is.

Common Misunderstanding 2
“The longer it is, the stronger it is?”
In the past, people thought that the longer an implant was,
the more stable it would be. However, recent studies have shown that
from 10 mm and above, increasing the length does not make a big difference in stability.
In fact, because of anatomical structures such as the nerve canal in the lower jaw
and the maxillary sinus in the upper jaw,
using a long implant unconditionally may be impossible or risky.
In other words, choosing the proper length that suits the individual is important.

Common Misunderstanding 3
“The thicker it is, the stronger it is?”
A thicker implant has the advantage of handling force well,
but if there is not enough surrounding bone,
forcing in a thick one can instead damage the bone.
It is like placing a large pillar on narrow ground
and causing the surrounding soil to collapse.
At least a minimum bone thickness around the implant
must be secured for long-term stability.
Therefore, when deciding the thickness,
the width and density of the patient’s bone must first be checked.

Then, what is really important?
In implant treatment, the most important thing is
a design and surgical method tailored to each individual patient’s condition.
● When the bone is not strong enough,
bone grafting is needed for reinforcement,
● When there is not enough gum tissue,
gum grafting or gum contouring is necessary,
● For patients with strong biting force,
it is necessary to increase the number of implants
and design a plan that distributes the force.
Even if the same brand and product are used,
the result can be completely different depending on who places it and how it is placed.

When it comes to implants, how they are placed is far more important than what is placed.
To sum up,
what determines implant success is not the brand
but the condition of the bone and gums, chewing force,
and the surgical plan suited to those factors.
Rather than the “famous brand” shown in advertisements,
it is far more important to receive an accurate diagnosis of your condition
and get customized treatment suited to it.
I hope today’s post was of small help to those of you
who are considering implants.
I always support your healthy teeth and daily life.
Sincerely,
Lee Jong-woo, Chief Director
