Hello.
We are The Square Dental Clinic,
thinking together about growth flow.

If your child’s teeth look a little uneven,
parents naturally tend to worry more.
"Should we start aligning them right away?"
"They’re still young.
Can we wait a little longer?"
Many thoughts may come and go.
Before that, though,
there is one question you should first consider.
Whether this is a time
when it would be worth checking once.
So today, we will organize this around
three points:
✔ When it is a good idea to check once
✔ When you do not need to start right away
✔ What differences can appear if you miss the growth period
I hope this post can serve as a small guideline
for understanding your child’s condition :)
More important than age,
is how much they have grown so far.

Many parents ask, "From what age can we start?"
In fact, what matters more than the number is
the child’s growth pattern.
In other words, even at the same age of 8,
the timing for evaluation differs depending on
growth speed and jaw development.
Usually, the flow is:
※ Around age 7 to 8,
check the overall structure once
※ Around the middle elementary school years,
confirm growth changes
※ Around puberty,
reexamine the direction of jaw development
So why is this period meaningful?
Because at this time, it is not simply a matter
of whether the teeth are aligned,
but a period when the direction and size
of the jaw bones also change together.
In addition, during a period when growth can still be guided,
there may be room to adjust the direction
in which the bones grow,
but after growth is almost complete,
the approach changes.

That is why, for us,
rather than asking, "Do the teeth look straight on the outside?"
we first look at whether the jaw’s growth direction
is staying within the normal range.
In the end, pediatric orthodontic treatment
is something that sits on top of the process of growth.
So when deciding on timing,
it is more important to look at the current developmental stage
than at age.
Can we just wait?
- There are separate criteria for that.

Not every child needs to start pediatric orthodontic treatment
right away.
And in reality, there are definitely cases
where waiting is fine.
However, if you see the following signs,
it is a good idea to check the structure once.
The front teeth do not naturally meet together
---
The lower jaw looks more prominent than that of peers
The habit of eating only on one side has become fixed
Thumb sucking or mouth breathing has continued for a long time
There appears to be a noticeably insufficient space for permanent teeth to erupt
These signs are not simply a matter of uneven teeth,
but signals connected to growth direction
and jaw balance.
So at this point, it is necessary
to organize the current condition as a baseline.

Of course, it may not yet be the stage
for using appliances right away.
Still, there is a clear difference between
watching without any plan and observing with criteria in place.
Especially during growth, even small changes can accumulate
and shift the direction,
so it is important to record the current state
and compare it at regular intervals.
The key is not to rush,
but to have criteria for observation.
With those criteria in place, waiting becomes a strategy,
and choices can become much clearer.
More important than making a quick decision
is making an accurate one.

"Have we already missed the timing?"
Many people worry about that first.
Still, to say it first:
just because it is late does not mean there are no options.
However, the direction of the choices may change.
For example, differences may arise in the following areas:
- Whether growth flow can be considered together
- How long the overall correction will take
- Whether space needs to be secured
- Whether the jaw structure needs additional treatment
In this way, the approach changes.

Why do these differences happen?
During growth,
the bones are still in the process of developing,
so there is room to adjust the direction itself.
On the other hand, in adulthood,
the structure is already in place,
so the approach becomes one of balancing
within that framework.
That is why, rather than saying,
"Let’s start right away,"
we first say,
"Let’s check the current condition once."
Rushing is not the answer.
But delaying without a 기준 is also not desirable.
The key is not whether it is early or late,
but understanding what stage it is at now.

If you have read this far, you may be left thinking,
"So what should we do for our child now?"
The answer to that question is surprisingly simple.
Pediatric orthodontic treatment is not simply a process
of changing appearance.
It is a period of balancing things
within the child’s growth flow.
So rather than rushing,
first check what stage the current condition is at.
✔ Whether we need to set the direction right away
✔ Whether we can observe a little longer
✔ Whether there is no need to worry just yet
That level of organization is enough.
