Hello.
‘Designing first impressions’
The Square Dental Clinic.

Crooked teeth can be a charming feature in childhood,
but as an adult, they can sometimes seem to create an unsophisticated impression and become a source of insecurity.

You may search for information, thinking that you now want straight, beautiful teeth like everyone else, but...
when some people say they had orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth while others say they solved the issue with veneers,
it is natural to wonder about the differences between the treatments and which choice is right for you.
In this column,
-
The need for orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth
-
How veneers for crooked teeth work
-
Characteristics of Minish for crooked teeth
I will explain these three topics one by one. :)

When should orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth
come first?
Of course, not every patient necessarily needs to begin with orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth.
veneers for crooked teeth may be performed right away.

However... in quite a few cases, orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth should come first. (^^;)
Having a crooked tooth means that it has deviated from the normal alignment of the teeth,
protruding forward or being twisted out of position.

- Key point: According to a clinical study published in an international academic journal,
among patients treated for crooked front teeth, those who underwent only prosthetic treatment such as veneers without orthodontic treatment had a 16% rate of side effects, including tooth sensitivity and tooth decay.
In contrast, among patients whose teeth were first properly aligned with orthodontic treatment and then followed by prosthetic treatment,
the rate of side effects decreased significantly to 2%.

What happens if you try to make only the tooth shape look beautiful without correcting the alignment?
To create a straight line that connects with the neighboring teeth that do not protrude,
a considerable amount may need to be removed from the front surface of the crooked tooth.
Therefore, the crooked tooth should first be safely moved inward into its proper position through orthodontic treatment,
and then prosthetic treatment such as veneers for crooked teeth should be performed to help protect dental health.

What are the characteristics and limitations of veneers for crooked teeth?
✔️ If you have a case that does not particularly require orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth,
✔️ or if orthodontic treatment has already corrected the position of the crooked tooth,
you may consider veneers for crooked teeth as the next step.

Veneers involve placing ceramic shells in the shape and color desired by the patient over the front teeth.
They can be performed without surgery, which is why they are sometimes called cosmetic dental reshaping.

However, one limitation of veneers is that they may involve removing approximately 0.5 mm of tooth structure.
As technology has advanced, no-prep veneers may also be possible if the patient wishes, but...
if even a mild degree of rotation or protrusion remains in the crooked tooth and a prosthesis is placed over it,
the result may make the tooth look even more uneven and protruding.

In other words, the tooth surface must be adjusted to some extent before attaching veneers for crooked teeth in order to maximize the aesthetic result.
Removing an appropriate amount of tooth structure may help improve adhesion.
However, if more than the appropriate amount is removed,
tooth sensitivity may develop, and in severe cases this may lead to root canal treatment.

What is ‘Minish,’ a treatment that addresses the burden of tooth reduction?
There is a treatment that has recently gained attention by addressing the tooth-reduction burden associated with veneers discussed above.
It is <Minish>.
The treatment method used for Minish itself is similar to that of veneers.

However, Minish’s top priority is not cosmetics but ‘restoring and preserving tooth function.’

Minish can also be performed without removing tooth structure,
and even when the tooth surface is smoothed, it is only minimally adjusted by 0.1 mm or less.

It causes almost no damage to the enamel layer, which can be described as the hard outer shell of a natural tooth,
and because it bonds completely to the tooth, it can offer both strong durability and aesthetics.

However, because Minish requires ceramic as thin as an eggshell to be closely fitted without the slightest error,
an advanced level of technique from the treating doctor is essential.
Even a gap of just 0.1 mm can allow bacteria to multiply inside it, causing side effects such as discoloration or tooth decay.

Therefore, to achieve a successful result,
it is advisable to choose a dental clinic equipped with an advanced system that accurately reflects each patient’s individual dental characteristics and considers dental health and harmony with the overall facial appearance,
with an orthodontic specialist who can microscopically analyze the space around the crooked tooth and establish a treatment plan,
as well as a specialist in comprehensive dentistry who can implement ultra-precise, nanoscale bonding technology on the tooth surface.
