Hello.
Beyond creating a beautiful first impression,
we are The Square Dental Clinic,
focused on helping patients restore
their quality of life
and confidence.

My teeth are yellowish, so I cannot help but envy celebrities whose teeth look so bright and white.
When I watch them, I naturally find myself wishing I could look like that too,
which often sparks an interest in celebrity teeth whitening.

Before simply undergoing a procedure to imitate celebrities, there is something you should do first.
That is, examine why your teeth became discolored in the first place.
The cause of discoloration differs from person to person...
so not everyone can expect dramatic results simply by starting with celebrity teeth whitening.
That is why, in today's column,
- Why teeth become discolored
- Features of celebrity teeth whitening
- The concept of non-vital tooth bleaching
we will discuss these three topics one by one. :)

What are the main reasons teeth turn yellow?
At the beginning, I mentioned that the cause of tooth discoloration differs from person to person.
Broadly speaking, the causes are divided into two types: intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic discoloration is a problem that develops from inside the tooth.
Aside from naturally yellowish teeth or color changes caused by aging,
discoloration can appear from within when problems develop in the nerves or blood vessels inside the tooth.

Extrinsic discoloration is the most common type.
Pigments in foods and beverages we frequently consume in daily life, such as kimchi, wine, coffee, and curry,
can penetrate and accumulate in the tiny pores on the tooth surface, causing the color to change.

Who is a suitable candidate for “celebrity teeth whitening”?
Following what we discussed above,
if you want teeth as white as those seen with celebrity teeth whitening,
you may expect considerable results when the cause of discoloration is extrinsic.

Many people ask whether at-home whitening is ineffective...
Of course, products sold commercially
also have some effect because they are based on hydrogen peroxide, the main ingredient in professional whitening products.

However, there may be practical limitations to achieving the level of brightness you want.
If an ordinary user applies a whitening product incorrectly, side effects such as inflammation or allergic reactions may occur.
For this reason, commercial products contain significantly lower concentrations of hydrogen peroxide than professional products.

In other words, commercial products require prolonged and repeated use before results become visible,
and their effects are not as strong as professional whitening.

While commercial products may brighten teeth by only one or two shades,
professional whitening
🦷 uses a high-concentration whitening agent approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety,
🦷 safely protects the gums by isolating them under the care of dental professionals,
🦷 takes a relatively short time of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes,
🦷 and may produce an average brightening effect of approximately 6–8 shades.

To make your teeth white and bright, like those seen with celebrity teeth whitening,
receiving professional whitening and maintaining the results for as long as possible
may actually be a more efficient strategy in terms of time and cost.

What if the discoloration is intrinsic?
On the other hand, you may be wondering what to do if the cause of discoloration is intrinsic.
In this case, as with celebrity teeth whitening,
it is difficult to expect significant results simply by brightening the tooth from the outside.
As mentioned, the issue originates in the nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth.

Therefore, in this case, it may be appropriate to take a fundamental approach:
first undergo root canal treatment to address the inflammation inside the tooth, followed by whitening using sodium perborate,
which is known as “non-vital tooth bleaching.”

- Key point: According to a clinical comparative study published in an international dental journal,
both professional whitening and non-vital tooth bleaching
were shown to have excellent color-improvement effects.
- Source: Randomized Controlled Trial Clin Oral Investig. 2024 Dec 20;29(1):24. doi: 10.1007/s00784-024-06048-9.
Non-vital tooth bleaching is also called “walking bleaching” because the whitening process continues while you go about your daily activities.

As you can see, the approach to whitening differs completely depending on its cause.
Therefore, rather than choosing a clinic that recommends a procedure unconditionally,
we recommend finding a dental clinic that listens carefully to your concerns, accurately diagnoses the condition of your individual teeth,
and can suggest an appropriate treatment approach.

This article explained the causes of discoloration and treatment options for those who have been distressed by yellowish teeth.
Here is a brief summary of the key points covered today.
1️⃣ Tooth discoloration is divided into extrinsic and intrinsic types. Professional whitening is most effective when the discoloration is extrinsic and caused by food and beverages.
---
2️⃣ Professional whitening performed at a dental clinic uses a high-concentration whitening agent with safe gum isolation, allowing you to expect a clear change in brightness within a short period.
3️⃣ When intrinsic discoloration is caused by an internal problem such as nerve damage, non-vital tooth bleaching, which begins with root canal treatment, may be an excellent alternative.
